Watch: Josh Prenot Press Conference “We’re Becoming More Like England”

2016 U.S. OLYMPIC TRIALS

First-time Olympian Josh Prenot spoke with the media after punching his ticket to Rio with an American Record in the 200 breast.  Prenot spoke on everything from race strategy to physics to soccer.  Here are a few highlights:

About the U.S. depth in the event:

Yeah, we’ve gotten real deep pretty fast in that event. I mean, to have three guys 2:08.1 or better, you could have asked people in 2013 if they thought was going to happen, and I don’t think anyone would have said yes. So it’s pretty cool to see the progression. I guess we’re becoming more like England, where we’re pretty good at breaststroke and pretty bad at soccer.

On whether or not his physics major helps him with swimming:

I’ve had people ask me that before. It would be cool to say that taking mechanics classes helps me think of new ideas for my stroke, but it honestly doesn’t at all. Swimming is kinda like, you have to — you just have to feel what works and experiment and kind of just see what works for you. There is definitely a scientific aspect to that, but physics, you have to know why everything happens and the intricate details of why it happens, and that’s just not really the experience that I have in swimming.

Tough crowd, that room… Not ones to take a joke. Great interview, looking forward to seeing if his prediction about the 2BK comes true.

Could have left out the last part about soccer. Not really needed.

Lighten Up, Francis.

That was far and away the best response from any of the press conferences all week.

Unfortunately, with Trump and Brexit, he could’ve left out everything after “more like England.”

I love his answers, hope that honesty doesn’t get trained out of him.

Hahaha he’s so blunt. About everything. You get so many canned responses from the more media trained athletes that it’s nice to see someone answer dumb questions honestly. And that second question was just dumb.

I wish I could like this twice. Most swimmer interviews, and those of other athletes too, are just so boring to watch. There’s such a resistance to mention specifics and give real answers. Exposing more personality, like this, is a great way for the sport to grow and have wider appeal. It’s also just way more fun to watch.
