Katie Ledecky continues to impress every time she dives in the water. Ledecky hammered through the second half of her 200 freestyle to pull out the win and take home another gold medal. She touched the wall first with a time of 1:55.16, finishing just ahead of the silver medalist and world record holder, Federica Pellegrini. Pellegrini touched second with a 1:55.32. The 2013 World Champion, Missy Franklin, earned the bronze medal with her time of 1:55.49.
The entire podium finished under 1:56, while the rest of the field remained above the barrier. Russia’s Veronika Popova just missed the podium, finishing in fourth at 1:56.16.
Katinka Hosszu (HUN), Shen Duo (CHN), Emma McKeon (AUS), and Femke Heemskerk (NED) all finished fifth through eighth, respectively, with 1:56’s.
Is anyone else frustrated by the difficulty of watching complete race video here? Where do you go to watch complete races, rather than just a highlight package?
I read through Today’s swim swam main page and news page several times and found it interesting that Katie Ledecky’s feat was at the bottom (3 page scrolls down?) of each part of the site. Again – Main page – bottom. “News” page – bottom. For the New York Times though, it seemed more important as it was the only swimming story that made their sports page. The Wall Street Journal finds her interesting enough that she has her own hyperlink for stories. While I get that it is important to have comprehensive swim coverage, are the folks at swim swam wholly unaware that she is already being talked about as one of the greatest athletes in history in terms… Read more »
Our content is simply ordered by the time it’s posted and things turn over very quickly with all the events going on this week. I suggest checking SwimSwam more often to catch all of the coverage 😉
Understood – there just seems to be much more interest in other news mediums/the world at large. Talked to folks who are on your site regularly and they found it odd as well which is why I asked the question. So it’s just a lost opportunity to communicate/pull in a larger audience which may not be your goal. Thanks for the response!

Go Pro and have it written in contract that they also pay for stanford education if that is what she wants. Learn from Missy mistake! Uncle owns part of New York Islanders but nothing like having you own money!!!!

I presume her family is already wealthy and that is why the incentive to go pro is so low.
Yes. Her uncle recently bought a big share in a NHL franchise.
I doubt she’s getting any significant amount of money from a rich uncle. Even if her parents are wealthy she is better off earning her own money.
LEDECKY, GO PRO NOW!!!!! She will able to afford any college tuition once she is done with swimming. But MAKE THAT MONEY NOW!!!
I really support college swimming for the total development of race-ready swimmers. But Ledecky is the best racer in the world. Arguably, she is entering the realm of 2007-8 Phelps, 2011 Lochte, 2013 Missy Franklin. She is going to come out undefeated in individual races, and taking a cumulative of 4-5 seconds off the 1500 and 800 freestyle world records. This is the pinnacle of sport. She doesn’t need to learn how to race better. Her yards accomplishments can never surpass what she’s already done, let alone what she is yet to do in LCM.

That would be awesome. So would 4:25.
My only reservation would be the lack of training opportunities with anyone who is her speed or faster. She trains with a good group of men in Maryland; she won’t have that at Stanford. That being said, she made the coach transition after 2012 very easily.
Considering her best 500 to date is 4:26.5, 4:15 is a little insane. Maybe 4:23? Of course, still pretty nuts! She’s better long course, so I don’t see her going 1:38, but certainly a 1:39 is in the cards and so is a 47 low/46 high.
