The stroke shootouts were back at the 2018 TYR Pro Swim Series stop in Mesa. This was just the 2nd time we’ve seen the stroke 50s in this format, as swimmers competed in shootouts for the first time at the Austin Pro Swim in January. In the shootouts, the top 8 swimmers in each of the respective strokes will compete in the quarterfinal. The 4 fastest swimmers then move on to the semifinal, with the fastest 2 from the semifinal moving on to the final. Those swimmers then go head-to-head to determine the winner.
The men’s 50 fly came down to World Junior Record holder Michael Andrew versus fellow U.S. National Teamer Tim Phillips. In the final round, Andrew dominated as he won in 23.38, picking up a win in his final meet as a junior swimmer. Phillips was 2nd in 24.11. That time for Andrew was just 16 hundredths shy of his lifetime best, which stands as a 23.22 from the 2017 World Junior Championships. He later went on the race Nathan Adrian in the 50 free shootouts.
Glad he finally won something recently!
Why does Swim Swam insist on identifying these races as “Shootouts” when TYR clearly labels them “Knockouts”?
The NRA infiltrates everything. I kid!
