Meet record: 50.86, Michael Phelps (USA)
American record: 49.82, Michael Phelps
Australian record: 50.85, Andrew Lauterstein
Canadian record: 52.28, Joe Bartoch
Japanese record: 51.00, Kohei Kawamoto
Australia All-comers record: 50.77, Michael Phelps
Michael Phelps won the gold medal in the men’s 100 butterfly with his time of 51.29. This is his first individual gold medal at a championship meet since making his comeback. Ryan Lochte finished second with a 51.67. Even though Tom Shields did not swim the event tonight, his time from nationals will hold up. Phelps and Shields will represent the United States in this event at the 2015 World Championships next summer.
Hirofumi Ikebata finished third for the bronze medal with his time of 52.50 for Japan. Tommaso D’Orsogna was fourth for Australia and Brazil’s Thiago Pereira finished fifth at 52.71.
Tim Phillips won the B-final of the men’s 100 butterfly with his time of 51.52. He would have finished second had he been in the A-final with that time. Australian Jayden Hadler finished second at 53.07, and Masato Sakai was third at 53.38.
Now that I’ve seen the full video, and I’m saying this to praise Phelps, not to criticize him; but IMHO Lochte had the better start and turn and finish, but Phelps’ swimming was so much better he made it look like it was easy for him to pass Lochte on the second 50!
Completely agree….long on the first turn and the finish which is the difference from a 51.29 and a sub 51. He has to be happy where he’s at on his swims. He is finishing very well and just has to get faster on the front halves of his 100s.
Agree completely.
10x like this comment 😀
Phelps just reminded everyone why he is the greatest: you need to be able to get it done when it counts! The list of people who can do that is very short…
well said! 😀

One thing Phelps comeback has accomplished – swimming is now back making the news scroll on Sportcenter – even if he doesn’t improve or perform quite at past levels, his presence draws media attention which is good for the sport. Now if meet sponsors could just imposed technical standards on whoever gets media rights to event to mandate live coverage that functions via streaming if its not being carried live on TV, swimming could take a step forward.
Sorry to say but Shields is very inconsistent, had a great nationals meet but at this level you must be able to hold tapper and still put up almost PB times. Great SC swimmer but will never reach that level in LC. Don’t agree with him being on worlds team, you cant just make a US international team, you need to show up when you get there!!!!!!
Phelps was really emotional about this win! This means a LOT to him, maybe more than most people thought it did; apparently it’s been an emotional struggle as well as a physical one! Maybe he loves this sport as much as WE do! I think we’re getting to see the man behind the medals during this comeback!
Where was Shields?
Unfortunately, Shields was the #4 US qualifier in Prelims, and only 3 athletes (up to 2 A Final, 1 B Final) are allowed to swim during the Championship Finals session per event.
So you win Nationals and then can’t make finals 2 weeks later… Just saying!!
To be fair, Shields was 4th, which is plenty high enough to make finals in almost any traditional meet. He had the misfortune of having three very fast teammates. 52.00 is worse than his nationals swim, but it’s still a very solid time
just saying what?
