Mitch Larkin had a successful 2015 Hancock Prospecting Australian Short Course Championships. He finished the meet with a world record in the 200m back (1:45.63) and two national records in the 50m and 100m back in 22.91 and 49.03, respectively.
This past weekend, Larkin became the first man ever to swim under 1:46 in the 200m back, breaking Arkady Vyatchanin‘s previous world record mark of 1:46.11, done in a “fast suit” at the 2009 World Cup in Berlin, Germany.
Larkin started the race with a strong first 50m (24.46) and second 50m (26.86), he turned at the 100 in a time of 51.35. The 22-year old from Brisbane, Australia was able to hold on for his second hundred holding 27.07 on his third 50m and 27.21 on his fourth 50m, resulting in a second half split of 54.28.
Larkin is the first Australian to set short course a world record since Christian Sprenger, who set the 200m breaststroke world record at World Championships in Rome 2009. He has been putting up impressive results in the pool, both long course and short course swimming and will certainly be a great asset to the Australian National Team for the upcoming Olympic year.
Not sure what’s up with the title. This is not the full race.
