Twice on Thursday, fans at the King County Aquatic Center were able to witness history, as Ryan Hoffer of the Scottsdale Aquatic Club broke the 15-16 National Age Group Record in the 50 free, swimming a 19.38. He has now gone under 20 seconds 11 times in his young career – more than all other 15-16’s combined – including the 19.45 that was the old record in prelims.

Otherworldly underwaters. I counted 7 strokes down, 8 strokes back (hard to tell because of switching camera angles. Went 15m underwater down, about 14m back so 7/8 makes sense.
It’s not that uncommon nowadays to see 50 freestylers going 15m off the start, but to go almost 15m off the turn and still go a 19.3? Incredible.
