WATCH: Ryan Murphy Takes On The Great White North

2016 CANADIAN OLYMPIC AND PARALYMPIC TRIALS

Fresh off the men’s NCAA Championships Cal’s Ryan Murphy is competing in the long course pool here at the 2016 Canadian Olympic Trials.

Murphy recently set an American record in the 100 yard backstroke at the NCAA Championships en route to gold, and is using the tail-end of a short taper to compete at the site of the 2015 Pan American Games.

Murphy is entered in the 100m backstroke, 100m freestyle, and 200m backstroke where he’s the top seed in both backstroke events.

While Murphy can’t qualify for the championship final due to his position as a foreign athlete, he has the opportunity to swim in the consolation final. Murphy is a safe bet to make the consolation final in all three events that he’s entered in.

Murphy’s best time in the long course 100m backstroke came at the 2015 World Championships, leading off the mixed 4x100m medley relay in a championship record time of 52.18. Since then Murphy has continued to establish himself as one of the best backstrokers in the United States and one of the top contenders to make the Olympic team this summer.
