On the final day of the Futures Championships in College Station, Sam Stewart closed out the meet in style, swimming a huge personal best in the 200 IM of 1:56.91. That swim blows away Stewart’s previous best of 1:57.70, which he swam in April at the U.S. International Team Trials.

In addition to being a personal best, the swim rockets Stewart up to ninth all-time in the U.S and into the conversation for future international teams.
Stewart moved to train at Texas A&M two months ago, after training with his home club, YMCA Hub Fins and being coached by his mother. SwimSwam reached out to Stewart about his training.
Yes, I’ve been doing a mix of Jay’s and Jason’s practices. I think the change of training environment. I have been training at home in Mississippi with my mom since 2019. We spent those years improving my technique on all four strokes and my strength in the weight room. I think I’ve had big swims in me for a while but it took a change of environment to pull it out. I improved as an athlete under my mom and Jason and Jay were able to sharpen the edges. – Sam Stewart on his current training
Loving this spotlight on the 200 IM. This guy is incredible. Beautiful butterfly and breaststroke; slicing through the water like it’s made of butter, really clean and powerful backstroke. Looks like he could’ve even attacked that final 50 a little bit more; interesting that he doesn’t just hammer the legs and actually swims the 6 beat kick with a bit of a pause in between cycles. With some more preparation and a big meet, I can easily see a 1:55. But… that brings me to my next question…. Where’s my “Shane Cassas Blasts 155.24” headline???? After coming back from worlds??? I think it’s ridiculous that swimmers at this level are allowed to attend Futures. The entire purpose of the meet is to allow the “future” stars a chance to race at an elite level meet. His 200 IM would have placed him 2nd at nationals.. and it’s not like he just dropped a ton to go a 1:56… He was seeded with a 1:57. Look at the results from futures in Texas and Ohio. It’s all college kids in finals..at least in Texas they didn’t stack relays. In Ohio age group teams were racing full college relays. A college team won both individual high points and the overall. I heard that he is going to Med school but not sure if TAMU has a med school?
They do.
Texas A&M does have a medical school, though it has been more recently been dramatically expanded. Currently, the school has campuses in BCS, DFW, Houston, and Round Rock for MDs, plus a school of engineering medicine in the med center in Houston.
He should go back to training with the Longhorns. That IM group with Foster, Casas and Stewart would be dirty.
I am sure he made his decision on where to train for a specific reason
