From Karl Ortegon’s Day 1 Finals Recap:
WOMEN’S 4×100 FREE RELAY – FINAL
- WR – 3:30.65, Australia: 6 AUG 2016
- CR – 3:31.48, Australia: 2 AUG 2015
- USA 3:31.72 AR
- Australia 3:32.02
- Netherlands 3:32.64
The women’s relay did not disappoint following the men’s race. Sarah Sjöström set fire to the world record with a 51.71 leading off for Sweden, while Mallory Comerford popped a 52.59 to break the American record leading off Team USA. Sjöström’s lead took Sweden far thanks to a 52.68 second split from Michelle Coleman, but after the third leg, USA and Australia pulled ahead.
Kelsi Worrell split a very strong 53.16, but Bronte Campbell‘s 52.14 second split got Australia back into the race. Katie Ledecky and Brittany Elmslie both split 53.83’s, but it was Simone Manuel with a dominant 52.14 anchor leg to hold off Emma McKeon (52.29).
Sweden fell to 5th, with the Netherlands pulling up to bronze thanks in part to a 51.98 split from Ranomi Kromowidjojo. Canada ended up fourth in 3:33.88, getting 52.9’s from Chantal van Landeghem and Penny Oleksiak.
I think Sarah Sjostrom would anchor the Swedish TEAM. iF THEY DO THAT I THINK THEY WON.
Surprised nobody’s commented on the Netherlands Kromowidjojo also splitting a sub-52. Okay, she was eclipsed in the same relay by Sojstrom’s lead out, but still…
You are right. Sjostrom’s world record put in the shadow incredibly fast results of Kromowidjojo, Campbell, Manuel, Comerford and McKeon. These five swimmers showed the time that suggested 52.5 in 100 free individual final race. Just a few month ago it would be considered the restricted area where Cate Cambell is allowed to be only. How quickly the understanding of what is normal and what is outstanding changes in our mind. Can’t wait to see the firework of impressive performances in women 100 free. I wish Penny Oleksiak could join this group going faster than in Rio.
Poor Ida Lindborg, Sweden’s third leg. Her kick was GONE over the last 25m, she overswam that like whoa.
This new commentator todd seems like he doesnt know much about swimming. His commentating is kind of cringe.
He has no idea. He said that this US relay was a “Mt Rushmore of Women’s Swimming” or something and like, jeez. He also just had his brain explode at the end of the men’s relay, talking about “a new level of performance for the Americans” or something.
Ok,.. what does that mean at all??? Can anyone translate on human non native speech??
Rafael – Mt Rushmore is a monument in the United States that features 4 men who are considered some of the most influential presidents in American history (Washington, Jefferson, Teddy Roosevelt, Lincoln). Figuratively, it’s become a way to talk about the most iconic/influential members of any group. For example, someone might say the “Mount Rushmore of American men’s swimming” would be something like Phelps, Lochte, Spitz and Biondi.
Ahem. Johnny Weissmuller, Don Scholander, Mark Spitz, and Michael Phelps.
And WHAT was Rowdy trying to say at 3:51-3:52. XD Just a bunch of yelling
