Yesterday morning in the heats of the women’s PARA S1-7 50m fly, Tammy Cunnington set a new world record in the S4 category, clocking a time of 53.10. That swim takes over three seconds off the previous world record of 56.36 set by Sandra Erikson of Sweden at the 2004 Paralympics in Athens.
Cunnington came back for finals with improvement on her mind, resetting the world record that put up in prelims with a very strong 52.90 performance to take 0.20 seconds off her previous world record.
Cunnington has been competing well all season, setting several Canadian records in her lead-up for Trials.
One of her best performances thus far at Trials was a 1:16.28 in the 50m breaststroke. Cunnington took 0.16 seconds off her prelim swim in order to do that, taking a grand total of 5.37 seconds off her seed time heading into the meet.
With all her events completed, Cunnington has to sit back and wait to see if she’ll be named to the 2016 Canadian Paralympic team that will compete in Rio this summer.
