Watch: Top Recruit Scotty Buff Crushes National High School Record in 100 Fly with 44.97

2023 OHIO HIGH SCHOOL STATE SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS – DIVISION I

St. Francis De Sales senior Scotty Buff crushed a national high school record in the 100 butterfly with a time of 44.97 at the Ohio Division I Championships on Saturday.

Buff backed up his ranking as the top high school recruit in his class, taking more than half a second off the previous national private high school record of Joseph Schooling of the Bolles School (Fla.), who swam 45.52 in 2013. Schooling would go on to win an Olympic gold medal in the 100 meter fly.

Buff’s swim is also the fastest-ever in high school competition; the previous overall record was a 45.47 set by NC State sophomore Aiden Hayes while at Norman North (Okla.) High School in 2021. It’s the third national high school record of the weekend following Will Modglin’s 45.08 in the 100 back and Aaron Shackell’s 1:32.85 in the 200 free on Friday.

Split Comparison, 100 Fly National High School Records

Scotty Buff, 2023 Aiden Hayes, 2021
50 21.09 21.08
100 44.97 (23.88) 45.47 (24.39)

Buff also broke the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) record formerly held by Virginia Tech freshman Carl Bloebaum (45.68), who stole his crown last year after Buff won in 2021, as well as the independent school record of 45.52 that belonged to Olympic champion Joseph Schooling from 2013.

A University of Florida commit, Buff’s time would have placed third at the recent SEC Championships behind Jordan Crooks (44.37) and Josh Liendo (44.11). It wasn’t a personal best for Buff, who has been as fast as 44.87 at Winter Juniors, where he placed second behind Thomas Heilman‘s otherworldly 44.67. Here, he reached the wall more than three seconds ahead off second-place finisher Chase Swearingen, a Kentucky commit.

In the 100 back, Buff placed second behind future Gator teammate Jonny Marshall for the third year in a row with a 46.71. His lifetime best in the event is a 45.72 from Winter Juniors. He also helped his St. Francis squad earn a runner-up finish in the 200 medley relay with a backstroke split of 21.29. St. Francis ended up placing seventh in the team standings behind first-place finisher Cincinnati St. Xavier.

He went 4/4/5/5 on breaths per length and hit 15m every time. Breathing every-other each lap before going no breath the last lap. That’s a really impressive and disciplined swim for a highschooler

He was faster at juniors right? I know it doesn’t count as a HS record tho

Buff is a ridiculous talent.

Florida relays will be absolutely insane next year (as if they weren’t already). Realistic shot at 4 NCAA relay records

Florida will probably win the 4 sprint relays with NCAA records in all 4 next month while dethroning Texas and Cal in overall team placement. Their depth is ridiculous when looking through current event rankings

people overreacted to florida the same way they were overreacting to ASU’s suited swims

Florida doesn’t even have remotely close to the amount of individual scorers that Tex/Cal do

Liendo, Chaney, McDuff, Mitchell, Alf Mestre, Mitchell, Watson, Savickas, Hillis, and Laur are all in a great position (with a few of those guys looking at big points).

4 of the 5 relays are going to be contending for titles and the 5th will still finish top 6.

Linscheer, Brown, Smith, Al-Wir, Pinero, Lindholm, and Alb Mestre are all going to qualify and all have a shot at picking up a few points

Gravley and Hout are also on the bubble from last chance this weekend, and if both make it, one is going to be left home.

This is not the same Florida team that has been overhyped as before. This is a team with double digit individual… Read more »

I see maybe 9 A finals there.
3 for Liendo, 1 back for Chaney, 500 free for Mitchell, Savicksas and Hillis for both breast distances. And that’s being generous on all.

Texas has 9 A final swims from 3 guys lol

Doesn’t Thomas Heilmann have the fastest time for a high schooler in 44.67?
