WATCH: Women’s and Men’s 5Ks at 2016 Open Water Nats (Full Webcast)

Videos courtesy USA Swimming.

Two days after the 10K races (you can see the full men’s webcast here and the full women’s webcast here) at the 2016 Open Water National Championships in Miromar Lakes, Florida came the men’s and women’s 5Ks. In both instances the races came down to photo finishes. The men’s contest, which went off first, featured an exciting sprint to the touch with Marc-Antoine Olivier of France out-reaching Ous Mellouli of Mission Viejo/Tunisia, 57:24.1 to 57:24.2. Ferry Weertman of Netherlands was just behind at 57:25.4 for third.

The women’s race was even more spectacular; Haley Anderson of Trojan Swim Club, the national 10K champion, attempted to catch France’s Aurélie Muller who had led for much of the race. The sprinting down the stretch was something to behold, as you will see below. Muller got the touch with 1:01:48.3, while Anderson was clocked at 1:01:48.4. Poliana Okimoto of Brazil made her way to the front of the pack, too, and came in third with 1:01:48.5.
