Virginia Tech rising sophomore Youssef Ramadan dropped a lifetime best 100 fly time of 51.83 at the Fran Crippen Swim Meet of Champions in Mission Viejo Sunday morning. He beat the FINA ‘A’ cut time of 51.96 to qualify for Egypt’s Tokyo 2020 Olympic Team.

Ramadan opened the race with an aggressive 24.36 50 meter split and finished the race in 27.47 to break his Egyptian National Record. Ramadan first broke that record in November 2020 at the U.S.  Open.

There, he posted a time of 52.99 to crack Omar Eissa‘s National Record time of 53.03 from 2016.

While as a non-U.S. citizen Ramadan is not eligible to be ranked among the all-time fastest U.S. national age group times, 18-year-old Ramadan would be ranked #2 out of the all-time fastest 100 butterfliers in the 17-18 age group, behind only five-time Olympian Michael Phelps. 

Only one 17-18-year-old U.S. swimmer has ever broken 52.00 in this event.

This 51.83 would have placed 6th in the men’s 100 fly final at the U.S. Olympic Trials last week, ahead of Louisville’s Zach Harting. It also would rank Ramadan #25 out of the all-time fastest U.S. performers in the event, regardless of age.

Going into this meet, Ramadan’s lifetime best time was 52.04 from the Pro Swim Series in May.

This was his only event of the meet, and he is the top seed going into finals tonight.

As a freshman at Virginia Tech, Ramadan had great success in this event in short course yards. In February, he became the fastest college freshman in the event in history by swimming a time of 44.32 in the 100 yard fly. This time also made him 5th-best performer at any age in history in the event.
