PRINCETON, N.J. – The Hoosiers completed their regular season sweep over Princeton on Fridaynight at the DeNuzio Pool. Colleen McNaught found Kelly Matthews, who netted the game-winning power play goal in sudden death overtime.
Kelly Matthews led seven Hoosiers in scoring with five goals, her third consecutive game with at least four goals. Colleen McNaught was everywhere on the IU attack, recording three goals and five assists.
Matthews and McNaught were the only Hoosiers with multiple goals in Friday’s game. Summer Creighton, Shelby Taylor, Alexis Jones, Rebecca Gerrity, and Sarah Myersnotched one goal each.
Mary Campbell delivered with another clutch performance in the cage. Campbell made nine saves in the game, four of which occurred in the fourth quarter and overtime. Creighton had another notable defensive game, recording one field block and three crucial steals.
A cross-cage goal by McNaught and a goal by Creighton gave the Hoosiers an early 2-0 lead. Princeton responded with a momentum-swinging three goals to take the lead, but IU responded with two more goals to end the quarter. Indiana led the Tigers 4-3 at the end of the first period.
The Hoosiers and Tigers went goal-for-goal in the second quarter. Princeton opened with an early goal to tie the game at four. Indiana retaliated with a goal from Gerrity, but the Tigers followed with two unanswered goals to take their second lead of the game. The Hoosiers finished the half strong with two goals from Matthews and Jones, and took a 7-6 lead into halftime.
McNaught doubled IU’s lead to start the third quarter from an opportunistic shot while looking for a teammate. The Tigers answered on the following power play to cut Indiana’s lead to one goal, and then tacked on a second to tie the game at 8-8. Matthews shot the Hoosiers into the lead off of a high-power attempt, but the Tigers rallied for an equalizing goal to close the third quarter.
Princeton took a critical 10-9 lead off of a counter attack to start the fourth quarter. The Tigers managed to hold that lead for over six minutes before a goal by Matthews tied the game with 74 seconds left in regulation. Princeton had one last chance to score a game-winner in regulation, but Gerrity made the clutch steal to send the game into overtime.
Indiana played tough defense in the first overtime period, highlighted by a steal from Meyers and a save in the cage from Campbell. Princeton took advantage of a power play and took an 11-10 lead heading into the final overtime period.
McNaught found Matthews at the start of the second overtime period to tie the game at 11, their third connection of the game. Then, with 48 seconds remaining in the game, Princeton took the lead on a power play goal. The Hoosiers called a time out and assembled their final play of the period. With 17 seconds remaining, McNaught found Taylor to tie the game at 12-12, sending the Hoosiers to their second consecutive sudden death overtime game.
The sudden death period was a well-contested battle, with both teams showcasing top-level defense. The Hoosiers forced a steal at 2m with two minutes to play, and Campbell made a critical save on Princeton’s final attack. Gerrity drew an exclusion for an IU power play. The Hoosiers took full advantage of the opportunity, as Matthews skipped in the decisive goal from long range for the 13-12 win.
Friday’s win was Indiana’s second overtime win over Princeton of the 2015 season. The Hoosiers are 3-2 in overtime games this season.
