West Virginia Adds Delaney Cox for the Fall of 2023

Making the decision to move from Virginia to West Virginia, Delaney Cox has announced that she will be joining the West Virginia University swimming and diving team in the fall of 2023. Cox is currently in her junior season at Lafayette High School in Williamsburg, Virginia.

Last season, the West Virginia women came in 5th out of the five teams that compete in the Big-12 Conference. The Mountaineers only had one woman medal at the meet, with Emily Haimes taking bronze in the 100 fly. Haimes has since left the program to swim at the University of Nebraska, giving WVU no returning medalists this season.

WVU currently has a strong underclassmen group in the backstroke events, with the top-3 times in the 200 back all having at least two years of eligibility remaining after this year. Freshman Emily Knorr currently leads the program in the 200 back, having touched in 1:59.06 in the event at the WVU Invite earlier this season. Cox will have two years of overlap with her when she arrives on campus in 2023.

Already this season, the team’s 100 back school record has been broken. Ana Zortea, a transfer from Florida State, set the school record in a time of 53.41. Zortea is in her final year of eligibility.

While WVU took 5th in the Big-12 last season, the conference will look entirely different before the end of her college career. The University of Texas has announced that they will be leaving the conference within the next five years. In its place, the Big-12 will be adding BYU, Cincinnati, Houston, and Central Florida to its ranks by the 2024-25 school year.
