Western Albermarle Sweeps Virginia Class 3; Bradley Posts 23.2 Record in 50 FR

The Western Albemarle boys and girls swept the 2020 Virginia Class 3 State Championships. Western Albermarle’s Noah Hargrove and Tyce Winter each contributed a winning double to the team’s victory. Hargrove was within half a second of his best to win the 200 IM in 1:51.91 and set a lifetime best 49.56 to win the 100 fly. Winter picked up a sprint sweep with his 21.21 in the 50 free and 46.86 in the 100 free. Hargrove led off the 200 free relay in 21.46 as the team missed the Class 3 Record by just 4 tenths. Winter anchored that relay in 21.08 as they took a 1:25.80 victory. Also swimming on that relay were Andrew Holzwarth (21.86) and Sam Johnson (21.40).

Monticello took down a Class 3 Record in the 200 medley relay. Izzy Bradley (back- 25.55) and Elisabeth Bendall (breast- 29.84) got the ball rolling. Athena Vanyo (fly- 24.39) and Kayleigh Stebbins (free- 25.32) closed as they set the mark in 1:45.10. That took nearly half a second off the record they’d already set in prelims. They also broke the Class 3 Record twice in the 200 free relay, setting the mark at a 1:37.45 in prelims. Bradley led off the finals relay in 23.34. Stebbins took on the 2nd leg in 25.52. Eloise Weary put up a 24.83 on the 3rd leg, and Vanyo closed in 23.31 as they lowered the record to a 1:37.00.

Individually, sophomore Bradley set the Class 3 Record twice in the 50 free. She first broke it in prelims with a 23.26. She clipped that with a 23.23 in finals. She took 4 tenths off her former best at this meet. Bradley clocked a 54.44 to win the 100 back, dropping over a second, and is now within 4 tenths of the Class 3 Record, which stands at a 54.04 done by Emma Muzzy in 2018. Relay teammate Vanyo put up a 54.51 to win the 100 fly, just a couple of tenths away from her best.

Western Albermarle sophomore Sam Johnson closed in on the State Record in the 200 free. He has 2 more years to go after the 1:39.51 record set by August Lamb last season. Independence’s Tatum Wall, also a sophomore, narrowly missed the record in the girls’ race. She was 2 hundredths shy with her 1:48.48 in prelims and went on to win the final in 1:48.53.

Following her swim in the 200 free, Wall went on the break the Class 3 Record in the 100 free. She first set the mark with a 50.11 in prelims before winning finals in 49.66. She’s half a second shy of the overall Virginia State Record, which has stood at a 49.15 done by Rebecca Jones since 2009.

Lafayette’s Colby Hurt also won a double. She won the 200 IM in 2:01.09 and the 500 free in 4:524.43. Colonial Heights freshman Riley Bridgman won her first state title in the 100 breast in 1:03.21. She’s got plenty of time to chase down the Class 3 Record of 1:02.95.
