SINK or SWIM
- 38:46 Who would have a faster SCY 100 IM in their prime, Caeleb Dressel or Leon Marchand?
- 42:27 Will Michael Andrew swim the 200 IM at 2025 World Champ Trials?
- 45:30 Most anticipated race at 2025 Women’s NCAAs?
- 49:00 Will Adam Peaty race in 2025?
- 50:51 Should we nix NCAA Last chance meets in favor of regional “play ins”?
Will there be any liability if we end up with suicide attempts (or worse) as a result of these cuts?
I wonder how many kids are going to move into their new campus in the fall thinking they are a D1 swimmer only to find out that the first few weeks are tryouts to make the team. This happened to one of my swimmers over 10yrs ago who walked on to an ACC team. Fortunately he made the team but his roommates were cut.
Agree with changing changing the Last Chance system.
I would be open to at least changing the current system a minimum of 6 or 8 schools to count as a last chance meet or limit it to 4-8 post conference meets for the whole country (with regards to functioning as last chance meets).
I have read some of the articles related to the House Settlement and I am not sure if I interpenetrated things correctly.
I thought that conferences outside the Power 5 had the option to opt in/out and if they did not opt in the roster limits does not apply.
I thought this was specific for D1 and did not apply to D2/D3.
I also wonder if the scholarship limitations from the current system would still apply to schools and conferences that opt out of the settlement.
Dan –
Schools have the option of opting into the settlement.
If they do, they are held to the roster limits, but also permitted to share revenue and provide scholarships for all on the roster.
If they opt out, they will stick to the current rules and scholarship limits currently in place.
This applies to D1 only (as far as I know)
As far as opting in / opting out for D1 non-Power 4 conferences… I was under the impression that it was a CONFERENCE decision and not a decision made by individual SCHOOLS within a conference? So for example, it’s my understanding that within the same mid-major D1 Conference…it wouldn’t be possible to have some schools within the conference opt out…while other schools opt in? Does anyone have clarification on that?
I think this is right? The Ivy League already announced that they have opted out (which is no surprise).
It does create some strange cases for swimming. E.g., I believe Boston College does not offer scholarships in swimming, but they do in other sports, and they are in the ACC. It seems like their swimmers get the worst of all possibilities (ACC roster caps, no scholarships, no NIL money). I’m sure there are other examples like this.
I may have… slightly… overstated my sink of Adam Peaty swimming this year.
Reached out to LSU about a different recruit, very solid— 45, 1:38, 4:28… and they said reach back out when he’s a 1:34… for reference, they had two guys swim 1:34 or better this year…
That swimmer wouldn’t have made Division 2 NCAA Championships in any of those events, and would still need a bit of improvement to make that. Something to consider moving forward
You’re right, LSU Should be a division 2 program
I think the point that is being poorly conveyed is this:
Teams are no longer needing to recruit “projects”. They will recruit 20 year old foreigners who are ready made. If a team like LSU, who has never been a power, or even conference threat, can reject a really good recruit… that’s sending a big message. Especially when that 1:38 would be a big contributor on a below average team.
This rule is taking away the coaching element in div 1 swimming. Would be curious to know how many NCAA scorers started out as a walk on recruit.
“never” is a long time. The LSU men won an SEC title in 1988.
LSU had a 1:36 on their relay… it wouldn’t be far fetched to say the 1:38 recruit could improve to something better than that…
Crazy… I just got cut from LSU. I go 45, 1:37, 4:24, and 3:55 4im… There will only be four Americans on LSU next season. Additionally, no American will be on any athletic money. All internationals on scholarship.
RIP SEC recruits…. Why wait this long to tell them?
We had a kid committed, and their SEC school told them TODAY that they were no longer allowed to swim for that school.
Heartbreaking. At least those already swimming in college have the portal. I feel especially terrible for commits who are seniors and now have their spot ripped away from them.
Was this a kid heading to that school in fall or a current junior?
Senior this year, supposed to enroll in the fall
Terrible!
When did Coleman move to NYC? I thought he lived in Austin!
I moved to Brooklyn in May 2024. I have a group of friends that all ended up in NYC so I tagged along. Was in Austin since 2017, still love it there.
