We caught up with Texas head coach Eddie Reese while on deck at the Orange and White Intrasquad. We asked him what he’s been doing differently with the longhorns this fall and as always he gave us a couple of things. Reese says they are further along in Rocktober than they have ever been (it’s not even October yet). He also mentions they’re using snorkels when they do flutter kick. Reese likes the position that puts their bodies in.

Geez I thought he retired already? Is this is retirement job? haha
highly motivated swimmers + clear-to-understand reasons for a set + loads of talent + Reese Juice = TITLES!
I remember when my coach told me about that Phelps kick set. He told it as 10 @1:30, 10 @1:20, 10 @1:10. As Eddie said, all flutter kick with a board. Absolutely ridiculous. I believe Phelps was in his early teens when he did that, around the same age I was when my coach told me about it. I remember it sounded so ridiculous at the time it was demoralizing to hear as a breaststroker with a “flutter kicking disability.”
Anyway, love hearing about legendary kick sets. We would do a 1000 for time and the team record was a 12:20 (dolphin kick on back) until my friend broke that doing flutter with a board, essentially holding 1:13s. Nuts.
LONG COURSE???
My impression from listening to Eddie’s interview was that it was SCY
definitely SCY
Yeah, has to be. I don’t think too many swimmers could make more than a few 100s kick LC on 1:10, given that about the fastest 50kick with a board I’ve ever heard of is like 26-27s LC, and that’s completely fresh. Hard to imagine someone being able to average 34-35 per 50 touch-and-go for 11-12 minutes. The LC equivalent to 1:30/1:20/1:10 in yards would be like 1:40/1:30/1:20 – still unbelievably good kicking.
That is some fast kicking!
I always wonder when people quote I kicked a 100 on some interval and went X time. Some people do flip turns with the board which is obviously faster, others(most) take one arm pull into the wall, some do neither. Those details make a big difference in the final time. What’s the general thought on this?
Every time in practice if we kicked for time I took one stroke and flipped with my board.
I’ve always thought 1 stroke into the wall and flip turns are both acceptable, board or no board
I believe Dr. Salo wants his swimmers to do a “perfect flip turn” with board tucked under the arm, and even a couple of UW dolphin kicks off the wall. To me, either way is acceptable, esp for backstrokers that do not get to use a K-board. Probably a lot of variation, dependent on age group and ability.
Reese’s model is basically KeepItSimpleStupid…no need to reinvent the wheel it’s mostly in the delivery and way he shapes/structures practices not actually what they’re doing
Together with the high quality of athletes in the water.
