Last weekend at the Canadian Summer National Championships in Pointe-Claire, Quebec Evan White of the Oakville Aquatic Club had a good weekend. White won the 200 IM in a new 15-17 national age group record time of 2:01.15, he also collected gold in the 200 butterfly, a silver in the 400 IM and collected a second gold as part of the Oakville 4 x 100 medley relay and a silver as part of the 4 x 200 freestyle relay.
He was instrumental in his team winning their first ever national championships and booked a ticket to Dubai qualifying for the Canadian World Junior Championship team.
A mere four days after the national championships were completed he was at it again.
Parc Jean-Drapeau Aquatic Complex in Montreal is playing host to 900 athletes from 159 different teams for the next five days for the Canadian Age Group Championships, which is where White started his meet off in the same fashion he ended the last, by breaking another 15-17 national age group record. This time in the 100 butterfly.
White won the event in a time of 54.05 beating the previous record of 54.30 that was set by Curtis Lutsch of the University of Calgary Swim Club in 2008. He was 81 one-hundredths of a second faster than the time he posted in the preliminaries at the national championships and with that in mind it should be interesting to see what else he can accomplish throughout the competition.
Two other national age group records were broken in the 100 butterfly. 12 year old Ray Yang of the Etobicoke Swim Club won the boys 13 and under event in a time of 1:01.11. Yang’s time broke his own 11-12 national age group record of 1:02.23, which he set earlier this year.
Yang also set the 200 butterfly mark this season, a record that looks like he may better later this weekend.
14 year old Emil Goin of Cote Saint-Luc Aquatics broke the 13-14 age group record in the 100 butterfly bettering a 19 year old mark of 57.45 that was set by Philip Weiss of the Surrey Knights Swim Club in 1994. Goin won the 14 year old boys event in a time of 57.31.
