Widmann, Rubin Named Division II Academic All-Americans of the Year

The Capital One Academic All-American program, the most widely recognized national academic program for NCAA athletes, has named their Academic All-American teams, and the Division II list is thick with swimmers.

Among those on the list include both winners of the Division II At-Large Academic All-American of the Year Awards: Mark Rubin from Incarnate Word and Julie Widmann from Ashland.

Both are repeat selections on the first team, as is Indianapolis’ Maura Donahue.

Weber held a 3.98 GPA through his career as a senior who earned 6 All-American awards at the 2013 NCAA Division II Championships. That includes an NCAA title in the 1000 free and runner-up finishes in the 500 and 1650. In total, he has 13 First Team All-American honors to his name and 4 Honorable Mention All-American honors to go with it.

Widmann is one of the great Division II swimmers of the last decade, as she graduates with 23 All-American honors and four NCAA Championships (the only swimmer in program history to do so.) She was a leader of the three-time champions in the 200 free relay, and added her own victory in the 100 backstroke as her team finished 12th overall.

She is also the conference record holder in the GLIAC, a top Division II conference, in both the 200 free relay and the 50 free.

The award is given on the basis of a combination of academic and athletic success. Read more about the At-Large classification here.

Among other notable first team members were Luke Weber from St. Cloud State. Weber was the 2013 NCAA Division II National Champion on the 3-meter springboard, and he also placed 2nd on the 1-meter. The CSCAA named him the Male Diver of the year to go with a 3.51 GPA as a Biomedical Sciences major. Marko Blazevski from Wingate was an Olympian in 2012 for his named Macedonia.
