In the SwimSwam Podcast dive deeper into the sport you love with insider conversations about swimming. Hosted by Coleman Hodges, Garrett McCaffrey, and Gold Medal Mel Stewart, SwimSwam welcomes both the biggest names in swimming that you already know, and rising stars that you need to get to know, as we break down the past, present, and future of aquatic sports.
Four-time Olympic gold medalist and Team Speedo athlete Ryan Murphy is focused on the 2023 World Championships. All work in the pool is through that lens, but in this SwimSwam podcast he allows us inside his head across a few topics.
Will he compete through the 2028 Olympic Games in LA? Ryan would love to compete in an Olympics on U.S. soil, but he’s got to weigh that against starting a career – starting his adult life. Ryan’s already prepping for a career beyond the pool, and he’s getting married next year. In sum, he’s thinking about it. (Watch the video, his answer, and tell me what you think in the comments.)
Short Course World Champs in Australia? Ryan’s not entirely sure how much he’ll rest, but he said SC Worlds falls over an ideal season midpoint, and he’ll rest due to the travel time alone flying downunder.
ISL vs World Cup? Ryan has opinions. Watch the podcast to hear them.
Indy World Cup performance? Ryan dropped a 22.9 50 back (silver), 49.67 100 back (bronze) and a 1:50.5 200 back (bronze). He’s happy with those swims, especially considering he took a long break after the long course World Championships in Budapest.

Such a pro’s pro. Sounds like he’s very open to trying to make a go of it through L.A. 2028
It feels like getting RM through 2024 would be great… give the guy a chance to see where he’s at. We aren’t even sure we will see CD in ’24
@Gold Medal Mel Stewart, Mel when are you going to bring Dressel to the pod? Have you reached out to him or his agent lately for an interview?
…we’ve reached out to his rep a few times since June. The responses have been the same– that he will come to the world of swimming when he is ready. He’s on a break. It sounds like a mental break. I “think” he’ll be back in training over the Dec holiday or Jan…but that’s just an opinion. I cannot confirm that.
Imagine returning to practice during holiday training after 6 months off. That’s gotta be the 3rd ring of hell.
…I hated holiday training when I was in shape. We did triples.
best comment of the day Mel!
…still traumatized from those triples…
That would make Ryan 33 years old. Assuming he can hang on to his times and no young stars beat him, he definitely has a chance.
33 is older, but Lezak swam his best at that age. Throw in an Olympics on US soil, and the pull stay in the pool is strong…. Ryan’s smart. Post career, it appears he’ll work in finance based on what he’s shared with me. He’s taken steps to build real relationships in that industry while competing. I think it’s a tough choice, but one he doesn’t have to truly make it until after Paris…. If he retires after Paris, the truth is he’ll make a lot of money just attending the LA2028 Olympics as a retired star. During those 16 days, recently retired gold medalists make 3-4 appearances every day, and the fees for these appearances (often only 30-60 minute… Read more »
Thanks for sharing the business side of this
…biz side interests me, and I wish we had more transparency on the topic like traditional pro sports. Braden’s done a lot to move the topic forward, but the personal side of rev is a positive. More swimmers are making more money and I’d like to dig into that evolution.
Lezak peaked at that age because of the suits.
And the adrenaline of chasing down Alain Bernard, who stands 6 feet 5 and can absolutely fly
Unbelievable at the end.
Sounds like we need to bring the suits back if we want RM 2028. Let’s do it FINA

….I think you’re right on that… Those rubberized suits extended careers (which, and 99% of people don’t agree with me, I liked)
