The 2019 New South Wales Senior Age Championships wrapped up tonight at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Center, but not before 21-year-old William Yang made some major waves over the course of the 6-day affair. The Loreto Normanhurst athlete raced his way to 2 gold medals and 2 silver, competing against talent from both home and abroad.

Yang was runner-up in the men’s 50m freestyle to visiting Japanese Olympian Shinri Shioura. Yang touched in 22.31 to establish a new NSW state record, while Shioura clocked a new NSW All Comers Record of 22.02 for the win.

Shioura’s 22.02 took over the previous NSW All Comers Record of 22.05 Olylmpiman James Roberts has held for 10 years.

Yang upgraded to gold in the 100m back, where the Bobby Hurley-trained dynamo logged a winning effort of 54.03, earning another NSW Record in the process. Splitting 26.39/27.64, Yang hit the wall .61 ahead of fellow Aussie Bradley Woodward, who settled for silver in 54.64.

Finally, Yang took the top prize in the men’s open 100m free, producing a winning mark of 49.34. That represented the only time of the final to get under the 50-second barrier.

Woodward would go on to win the 200m back in 1:58.11 to collect a new NSW Record of his own, while Meg Bailey did damage across the women’s open 200m fly, 400m free and 400m IM events.

During the loaded schedule, the Ohio State Buckey earned winning marks of 2:11.43 in the 200m fly, 4:15.61 in the 400m free and 4:43.28 in the 400m IM, the latter of which established a new NSW state record for Bailey.

Carlile’s Se-Bom Lee topped the men’s 200m IM field by over 2 seconds with his gold medal-worthy 2:00.25, while he also collected 400 free gold in 3:55.39.
