With a day and a half in the books, one can already say that Williams senior Benjamin Lin is ending his collegiate career on a high note at the 2017 NCAA Division III Championships. He contributed a 22.01 leadoff 50 backstroke to the Ephs’ fourth-place 200 medley relay on Wednesday night, then qualified first in the 100 fly on Thursday morning in prelims. In his next “at-bat,” Lin broke the NCAA Division III record in the 100 back leading off the Williams 400 medley relay.
Lin already owned the NCAA mark, having gone 47.03 leading off William’s 400 medley relay in finals at the 2015 NCAA Division III Championships. (That relay set the Division III mark; it stood for two years until Emory broke it in prelims this morning.)
Lin was out in 22.51 and back in 24.42, for the first sub-47 100 backstroke in Division III history. Lin has the potential to swim the 100 back three more times in this meet: leading off tonight’s relay in finals, and prelims and finals of the individual event.
His record-breaking splits, so far, are:
- 3/16/17 leadoff, prelims: 22.51 / 24.42 = 46.93
- 3/19/15 leadoff, finals: 22.44 / 24.59 = 47.03
