Wilson York became the third-fastest 13-year-old American ever in the 200-yard breaststroke with a 2:03.78 to win the event at last month’s Kentucky SCY Championship in Louisville.
U.S. Performers, 13-Year-Old Boys, 200 Breaststroke (SCY)
- Reece Whitley (Penn Charter Aquatic Club), 2:00.12 – 2013
- Ethan Dang (King Aquatic Club), 2:00.57 – 2015
- Wilson York (Lakeside Swim Team), 2:03.78 – 2023
- Joey Campagnola (West Florida Lightning Aquatics), 2:05.65 – 2022
- Oryan Liu (Pleasanton Seahawks), 2:06.25 – 2022
Only Reece Whitley (2:00.12) and Ethan Dang (2:00.57h have been faster than York at age 13.
The Lakeside Swim Team standout lowered his previous-best 2:05.02 from earlier in March, which also stood as the former 13-14 LSC record. York skipped over 2:04-point entirely with his big time drop. He also set an LSC record in the 100 breast, placing fourth with a 56.78 that took down Will Scholtz’s previous mark from 2019. York now ranks 27th in the U.S. boys’ 13-14 NAG in the 100 breast and 35th in the 200 breast.
York also notched a victory in the 200 IM with a 1:54.25, lowering his previous-best 1:55.16 from January. He added a lifetime best in the 100 back (52.86), dropping a couple tenths en route to a runner-up finish.
His 16-year-old teammate, Haley McDonald, led the Lakeside girls squad with a sweep of the breaststroke events. McDonald captured the 100 breast crown in 1:02.03, posting a massive three-second drop off her previous-best 1:05.35 from January. She also dropped more than a second in the 200 breast with a 2:14.21.
Etown Dolphins 15-year-old KC Braeger captured both the 100 back and 200 back crowns. She shaved almost a second off her previous best from January with a 54.43 in the 100 breast and dropped nearly two seconds in the 200 back with a 1:58.68.
Paducah Swim Team 17-year-old Madison Patel tallied top-three finishes in the 50 free, 100 back, and 100 fly, clocking best times in each. The SMU commit won the 50 free (23.49), earned a runner-up finish in the 100 back (54.64), and a third-place showing in the 100 fly (55.43). Patel’s most impressive drop came in the 50 free, where she improved by nearly a full second.

literally so dirty wtf 😭
This is a fast time, but I think Reece Whitley was also faster?
According to USA swimming, Whitley went 2:00.12 at age 13. The meet was on 12/12/2013.
Hopefully he goes somewhere that will actually focus on fostering and strengthening his breaststroke, rather than a program (NCS, cal) that throws breaststrokers at the end of lanes to get run over by flyers/backstrokers
Minnesota, IU, and GT all great options
can 13 year olds get recruited?
Georgia Tech????? What other options are out there for breaststrokers?
This is one of those swims that you wonder… Where is the video? Something doesn’t add up for me! Im sure I can speak for the rest of the swimmers too
I was there… the time is legitimate! Wilson also still has 7 months until his 14th birthday… incredible talent in all strokes and distances, but another level in the breaststroke (56’s in the 100 SCY).
Not really, no.
Says the person who has never done it.
Saw him compete as a 12 y/o at Zones last summer. IIRC 32.2 or so in the 50 breast LCM, 1:09 high 100 breast. Totally legit. Lakeside has a great one!
Patty wildin’
Coach Pat, your comment is absolutely ludicrous! This was a sanctioned USA Swimming meet held on the UofL campus. Wilson has been nationally ranked in a number of strokes leading up to his current age group. This isn’t a surprising result at all. He’s one of many Lakeside Seahawks in Louisville KY. that are highly nationally ranked. You don’t speak for the “rest of the swimmers” with that comment. The “rest of the swimmers” bust their tails six days a week and they earn these times when they touch at the finish.
He’s my friend and he is crazy fast really good distance per stroke
Essentially just said that USA swimming records are inaccurate making every record wrong
Congrats to Wilson! His accomplishment shines bright during these dark times for Louisville in the midst of another mass shooting. Is there any way to prevent another tragedy like this?
What an off taste comment
