Brendan Hyland is ready to fly at the Irish World Champ Trials.

Brendan Hyland

From a boxing family, Brendan knows what it’s like to train and compete hard. He broke his first Irish Record at 17 and now holds the 100m, 200m Butterfly and 400m Individual Medley national records. With a 6 foot 7 inch wingspan and a self-confessed Phelps fan, Brendan is certainly walking in the footsteps of a swimming giant. Hyland has a packed schedule for the Irish Open, racing in six events all up. He has his signature event, the 200m Butterfly, on Friday followed by the 200m Individual Medley on Saturday. Sunday will be Hyland’s biggest racing day with the 100m Butterfly and 200m Individual Medley events back-to-back.

Jack McMillan

Bangor Swimming Club backstroker Jack McMillan started out swimming to attain a life skill but found his love for the sport in the thrill of racing. He is the current Irish Junior Record holder in the 200m and 400m Freestyle. Jack made his international debut at the 2018 ISF World School Games winning gold in the 200m Freestyle and silver in the 100m Freestyle. He will be focusing on the 200m and 400m Freestyle this week and is hoping for a senior team selection. McMillan will also be going up against fellow Funky Trunks athlete Hyland as they slug it out in the 200m Individual Medley.

Sprinter Robbie Powell is hoping to turn his Youth Olympics success into senior team selection.

Robbie Powell
With his dad as his coach, Robbie broke 50 seconds for his 100m Freestyle at only 17 and has already got a Youth Olympics and European Championships under his belt. Built for speed, Robbie loves the adrenaline of racing and dreams of qualifying for Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024. He will be defending his title in the 50m Freestyle this week and racing in the 100m and 200m Freestyle.

Sean Scannell

Despite coming off of injury Sean Scannell is hoping to qualify for Junior Worlds and European Champs at the Irish Open. He’ll be racing the 50m, 100m and 200m Backstroke and the 100m Butterfly.

McSharry won’t be competing this time due to illness, but she is still rocking her Colour Burst Funkitas.

Mona McSharry

Unfortunately illness has ruled out one of Ireland’s most exciting and diverse young swimmers Mona McSharry for this week’s racing. Mona broke onto the world swimming stage with victory at the 2017 Junior World Championships in the 100m Breaststroke. Since then the Ballyshannon swimmer has gone from strength to strength breaking the Irish National Record in all Breaststroke distances and the 50 Freestyle while competing at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Argentina. She is working hard to get herself on track for 2020.

Here’s hoping the new Funky Trunks and Funkita collection will bring these Irish athletes plenty of luck this week! See below for the rest of the On The Surface collection.
