Men’s Meet
THE QUICK STORY: The SCAD Savannah men’s swimming team – No. 4 in the NAIA – hosted the 12th Annual SCAD Invite December 1-3 and placed fourth out of 15 teams.
SCORES: The Bees placed fourth with 399 points behind Wingate (1021 points), Keiser (613.5 points) and Emory (470 points). Wingate is currently ranked No. 10 at the NCAA Division II level while Keiser is No. 1 in the NAIA and Emory is No. 2 at the NCAA Division III level.
WINNING TIMES: Joel Thatcher won the first event for the Bees when he placed first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:28.35 Thursday night.
Joel Ax won the 200-yard freestyle (1:36.81) and the 200-yard butterfly (1:48.71).
TOP EIGHT TIMES: Thatcher placed second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:39.27 while Ax finished second in the 200-yard IM (1:51.36).
Ryan Sweat came in sixth in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 53.00 and Thatcher placed sixth in the 100-yard freestyle (46.17). Thatcher and Sweat followed up with a fifth (1:53.90) and eighth-place (1:55.60) finish in the 200-yard butterfly, respectively.
RELAY FINISHES IN THE TOP EIGHT: The 800-yard relay team of Josh Smilie, Thatcher, Roger Kjos and Ax came in second with a time of 6:51.67 while Thatcher, Anton Arvidsson, Ax and Nick Wargo placed third (3:06.33) in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Arvidsson, Tim Olbrich, Sam Kim and Ax finished fifth in the 200-yard freestyle relay while Brogan Bunner, Sam, Sweat and Thatcher placed eighth in the 400-yard medley relay.
Women’s Meet
THE QUICK STORY: The SCAD Savannah women’s swimming team – No. 1 in the NAIA – placed third at the 12thAnnual SCAD Invite. The team hosted 14 other teams at the Chatham County Aquatic Center December 1-3.
RECORDS: Julie Woody and Lydia Reinhardt set school records on Saturday. Woody set a record in the 100-yard freestyle in the Saturday morning preliminaries with a time of 51.34. On Saturday evening, Woody won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 51.36. Reinhardt placed second in the 200 yard butterfly with her record setting time of 2:03.26
The previous 100-yard freestyle record (51.54) was held by Cassie Dixon at the Blue Mountain Conference Championships while the 200-yard butterfly record (2:03.33) was set at the 2013 NAIA National Championships by Hannah Legg.
SCORES: SCAD placed third – out of 15 teams – with 418 points behind the Wingate (1273 points) and Emory (559). Wingate is currently ranked No. 9 at the NCAA Division II level while Emory is ranked No. 1 at the NCAA Division III level.
WINNING TIMES: Woody won the first event for the women on Thursday night in the 50-yard freestyle with her time of 23.44. The senior went on to win the 100-yard freestyle (51.36) as well.
TOP EIGHT TIMES: Rebecca Justus placed eighth in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:46.39 and fifth in the 1650-yard freestyle (18:11.74).
Woody placed sixth in the 100-yard butterfly (58.13) and the 100-yard backstroke (58.36).
Sara Lacusky and Emily Rozar finished fifth (1:06.31) and sixth (1:06.60) in the 100-yard breaststroke, respectively.
In the 200-yard breaststroke, Alle Ragland and Rozar came in sixth and eighth with their respective times of 2:26.65 and 2:29.38.
RELAY FINISHES IN THE TOP EIGHT: Julie Henninger, Justus, Reinhardt and Richey finished the 800-yard freestyle relay in third with a time of 8:01.03 while Richey, Henninger, Lacusky and Woody placed third in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
In the 200-yard medley relay, Woody, Rozar, Cadie Crow and Abigail Richey finished in sixth with a time of 1:50.00 while the team of Crow, Lacusky, Reinhardt and Richey placed sixth (4:00.75) in the 400-yard medley relay.
WHAT’S NEXT? SCAD is back in the pool on January 7 when the team competes in the Converse Quad in South Carolina. The meet starts at 1:00 p.m.
