As Winn Aung of the Redding Aquaducks approaches his 11th birthday, he found time to sneak in one more National Age Group birthday before aging up. His latest comes in the 200 long course meter freestyle, where he swam a 2:11.32 on Friday at the Arena Grand Challenge in prelims.
That swim placed him 52nd overall, which didn’t allow him to advance to finals, but did put him under the old record held by Adam Hinshaw at 2:12.18 from 2004. Hinshaw currently swims for Cal and is competing at the World University Games this week in Kazan, Russia.
For Aung, this is the third different National Age Group Record he’s broke in the 10 & under age group this summer. He first took down the 100 free on May19th with a 1:01.21. He then lowered that again on June 16th with a 1:00.67.
Then, on June 23rd, a week later, he broke Kris Humphries’ 50 freestyle record as well (Humphries had held the 100 previously).
Now he holds three of the four long course freestyle records.
Also on Friday, Aung swam the 100 fly in 1:09.58, which wasn’t quite his best time, and he still has the 50 and 400 freestyles on his schedule. His best time in the 400 free is 4:45.19, which is 6 seconds shy of Hinshaw’s record in that event.
The meet runs through Sunday at Clovis North High School in Fresno.
Full meet results are available on the Meet Mobile smartphone app.
An American with a Burmese (Myanmarese) name?
He actually looks kinda big, and has a deeper voice for a 10 year old.
SRSLY the kid is talented. How long beforre he goes pro?
What sense of humor! 🙂
Nice video news report about Winn on YouTube. He certainly doesn’t look or talk like a 10 year old. Looks about 12-13. Hope he keeps up his success as he ages up!
