Winnington Tunes Up In Long Course, Takes 4 Golds At QLD Medal Shots

The annual Queensland Medal Shots Long Course Preparation Meet kicks-off the long course season for state swimmers, with the 2-day affair giving clubs a chance to get some racing under their belts at Brisbane Aquatics Centre.

19-year-old Bond swimmer Elijah Winnington took a break from his International Swimming League (ISL) short course days a member of London Roar and instead engaged in this local long course competition.

Taking on a trio of freestyle events, Winnington took gold in the men’s 100m free, 200m free and 400m free timed finals. The reigning World Junior Record holder clocked times of 50.55 in the 100m, 1:49.62 in the 200m and 3:53.39 in the 400m free to reap victories. He also snagged the top spot in the 200m IM, albeit in 2:06.49.

All outings were well off the teen’s bests, but representative of this being the first long course meet at which he’s competed since August where he tried the U.S. Nationals on for size. He busted out a solid 1:46.19 in the 200m free, as well as a time of 3:47.39 to take gold in the 400m free there at Stanford.

25-year-old Kareena Lee of the Sunshine Coast is the nation’s first woman to be confirmed by the Australian Olympic Committee for next year’s Games in Tokyo. She was in the pool this weekend, also topping a trio of freestyle podiums.

Lee wrapped up gold in the 200m free in 2:02.78, the 400m free in 4:13.55, as well as the  800m free in 8:43.11.

Visiting swimmer Barbora Zavadova of the Czech Republic snagged gold in the 200m IM in 2:20.79, as well as the 400m IM in 4:51.78, while New Zealander Eve Thomas got it done in the women’s 1500m free in 17:02.42.

Nick Sloman of the open water realm took 1500m gold in 15:45.54, as Georgia Bohl beat the women’s 200m breast field in 2:31.73.
