Winter Juniors Qualifier Drew Johnson Makes Verbal Commitment to Kentucky

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Clearwater, Florida native Drew Johnson has made a verbal commitment to the University of Kentucky for 2022-23.

“I’m so excited to announce my commitment to swim at the University of Kentucky!! I want to first thank my coaches Kyle, Scott, Kacey, Cory, Mr. V, and any other coach that has helped me along the way! I want to thank my friends and family for sticking with me through everything and being their to always support me! I also wanna thank all of my teammates over the last 3 years for inspiring, encouraging, and pushing me to be my best throughout my time with them. It’s hard to put into words the excitement and gratitude i feel. I’ll never forget when I wasn’t fast enough to make regionals my freshman year, and promised myself that one day I would be swimming in the SEC. LETS GO BBN!”

Johnson is a senior at Clearwater High School. Last season, he was runner-up in the 50 free (20.89) and won the B final of the 100 fly (51.09) at the 2020 FHSAA Class 3A Swimming and Diving State Championships. He also anchored the Tornadoes’ 200 free relay (21.13).

Johnson swims club with Radiant Aquatics and specializes in sprint free and fly. After going lifetime bests in the 50 free and 100 fly at the 2020 high school state meet, he proceeded to add PBs in all his events, both SCY and LCM, over the next eight months. In February, it was the SCY 100 free and 100/200 IM at the BERK February Last Chance Meet. A month later, it was the 200 free and 50/200 fly at the Florida Swimming Spring Senior Championships. This summer, he improved his PBs in the LCM 50 free (Winter Juniors cut of 24.01), 100 free (52.67), 200 free (1:58.98), 400 free (4:33.19), 100 fly (57.68), and 200 IM (2:23.99) at the Gulf Swimming Junior Olympics.

Best SCY times:

  • 50 free – 20.89
  • 100 free – 47.82
  • 200 free – 1:44.93
  • 50 fly – 23.50
  • 100 fly – 51.09
  • 200 fly – 1:57.33

Johnson will join the UK squad with fellow class of 2026 verbal commits Brady McInerney, Kevin Glennon, Levi Sandidge, Logan Ingerick, Logan Smith, and Ryan Merani. Kentucky finished seventh of ten teams at the 2021 SEC Men’s Championships. The Wildcats did not score in the 50 free; their highest finisher was then-freshman Max Berg (20.02) in 27th place. Louis Barker (20.26) and Max Hawton (20.44) also competed in the individual event. Johnson will overlap with Berg and Hawton. It took 19.97 to get a second swim in the 50 free at the 2021 conference meet.

If you looked into this kid at all, you’d see he has only been swimming for 3 years total. I’d say he’s doing fine.
