Winter Juniors Qualifier, Jasmine Liu, Commits to Minnesota for 2023

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Jasmine Liu,  a Winter Juniors qualifier from California, has announced her commitment to the University of Minnesota. Currently in her senior year at Esperanza High School in Anaheim, CA, Liu is expected to join the Gophers this fall, ahead of the 2023-2024 season.

I chose to be a Golden Gopher because the team welcomed me as if I were already part of the team and the environment was an indescribable feeling that only experience can teach. I am so excited to be able to call Minnesota home for the next 4 years!

Outside of high school season, Liu trains and competes with the Mission Viejo Nadadores. She specializes in the breaststroke, IM and freestyle events.

Best Times SCY:

  • 100 breast- 1:03.15
  • 200 breast- 2:16.34
  • 200 IM- 2:04.78
  • 400 IM- 4:23.95
  • 500 free- 5:03.66

Most recently, Liu competed at the Carlsbad Speedo Sectionals. There, she swam the 100 free, 100 breast, 200 breast, 200 fly, 200 IM and 400 IM. her highest finish of the meet came in the 100 breast, where she was 13th in both prelims and finals. Her time of 1:04.10 was just under a second slower than her personal best, set in March of 2022.

In December of 2022, Liu swam the 100 breast, 200 breast, 200 IM, and 400 IM at Winter Juniors. She finished 66th in the 200 breast and 69th in the 100 breast, finishing just a few seconds shy of her personal best in each.

At the 2023 Women’s Big 10 Championships, Minnesota finished 5th out of 12 teams, after having finished in 6th for the previous 3 years. They went on to send 4 athletes to NCAA’s, ultimately finishing 17th.

The Gopher’s top breastroker, Emma Lezer, just finished her senior season. Over her career, Lezer qualified for finals in both the 100 breast and 200 breast all four years, qualifying for NCAAs in 2022. In high school, her best times were 1:01.43 and 2:16.23, respectively. During her time at Minnesota, she lowered her best times to 59.33 and 2:10.90.

Liu’s current best times would have placed her in the C finals at this year’s Big 10 Championships. In both the 100 breast and 200 breast, Liu’s times would have placed her 23rd overall, and 2nd for the Gophers. Current senior Emma Lezer was the only Gopher to qualify for finals in the breaststroke races, finishing 11th in both.

Liu joins six other women in the class of 2023 with her commitment These include two Serbian National Team members, Mina and Anja Kaljevic, and the top 2023 recruit out of Minnesota, Katie McCarthy. She will also be joined by fellow breaststroke Ava Goodno, whose top times are 1:02.74 in the 100 breast and 2:21.68 in the 200 breast.
