Wisconsin Picks Up In-State Sprinter with 19.1 Relay Split, Ben Wiegand

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Sun Prairie Storm’s Ben Wiegand is staying in-state with a verbal commitment to the University of Wisconsin for 2021. He’s a rising senior at Sun Prairie High School.

I am beyond thrilled to announce my verbal commitment to swim and study at the University of Wisconsin. This amazing opportunity is a result of the ongoing support I have received from my family, teammates, teachers, and coaches. I can’t wait to be a Badger! #OnWisconsin

TOP TIMES (SCY)

  • 50 free – 20.16
  • 100 free – 45.28
  • 200 free – 1:46.70
  • 100 breast – 56.79
  • 200 breast – 2:07.14

At the 2020 WIAA Division 1 HS State meet, Wiegand claimed the D1 title in the 50 free (20.16) and was runner-up in the 100 breast (56.79). He also split a 24.90 breast leg on their 200 medley relay and anchored their 200 free relay to a state title with a huge 19.11 anchor leg.

Wiegand is a pure sprinter, and a 19-low relay leg would make the 200 free relay team on most NCAA teams. He would’ve been the fastest leg on Wisconsin’s best 200 free relay last season, a 1:18.43 that took seventh at 2020 B1Gs. Wisconsin only had one C-finalist in the 50 free finals at that meet: Kevin Braun (20.00), who just exhausted his eligibility. Griffin Back, their 200 free relay lead-off at B1Gs (19.98), just finished his senior season, too.

For head coach Yuri Suguiyama, Wiegand will be part of the new sprint crew in Madison. We just ranked Wisconsin’s incoming class as an honorable mention, and part of that class is 20.0/44.0 sprinter Andrew Benson and 20.5/44.7 sprinter Jake Newmark.

Wiegand has another year of high school left to develop, though, so he’ll have three seasons of overlap with Benson and Newmark. He joins sprinter Nico Butera (20.9/44.8), Turkish distance specialist Yigit Aslan, and breaststroker Matthew Segal in the Badgers’ class of 2025.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a club coach mentioned unless there is some sort of special connection to the school
