The 2019 Polish National Swimming Championships begin tomorrow, where the nation’s junior and senior athletes will be vying for spots on the most coveted elite rosters for this summer. Bids for roster slots on the World Championships and Universiade (World University Games), among other competitions, are on the line over the course of this 5-day competition.
2018 European Championships silver medalist Radoslaw Kawecki leads the field in his specialty 200m backstroke event, holding an entry time of 1:56.07 from that meet in Glasgow last year. The 27-year-old veteran is also slated to swim the 100m back, but is seeded behind top dog Kacper Stokowski, who holds the fastest entry mark at 53.82.
The men will need at least a 54.06 in the 100m back and 1:58.34 in the 200m back to make it to Gwangju, both doable marks for the Poles.
Another one to watch is Wojciech Wojdak, the man who scored silver in the 800m freestyle at the 2017 World Championships in Budapest. Registering a time of 7:41.73 there, Wojciech logged a new Polish National Record. The 23-year-old will be racing that pet event, as well as the 1500m free and 400m free where he enters as the top seed in each.
Youth Olympic Games medalists Jakub Kraska and Jan Kalusowski are expected to race, along with veterans Konrad Czerniak and Kacper Majchrzak, along with newcomer Aleksandra Knop.
