As we wind down the month of September, the arms race for swimming and diving talent is in full force and the University of Michigan is getting its share of early commits. The latest to give his verbal accord to Coach Mike Bottom is Olympic Trials qualifier Charlie Swanson, from Richmond, Virginia. Swanson will join Jacob Montague, Jake Herremans, James Jones, and Robert Zofchak, all of whom have verbally committed to the Wolverines.

Swanson swims for NOVA of Virginia and St. Christopher’s School in Richmond, Virginia. He led St. Christopher’s to a second-place finish at the 2015 Virginia Independent Schools Championships, winning the 200 IM (1:48.90, a VSIS record by 1.3 seconds), taking second in the 100 breast (55.93), and splitting a 25.45 breast and a 46.23 100 free on the Saints’ winning 200 medley and 400 free relays. Swanson is a triple-event qualifier for 2016 Olympic Trials; his top times are:

  SCY LCM
400 IM 3:48.98 4:20.37*
200 IM 1:48.90 2:03.70*
200 breast 2:00.05 2:17.12*
100 breast 55.93 1:04.38
200 free 1:39.67 1:53.38
500/400 free 4:26.75 3:59.84
1000/800 free 9:08.90 8:36.43

*qualified for 2016 Olympic Trials

Swanson should have no trouble hitting the ground running when he gets to Ann Arbor. His best 400 IM time would already make the “B” final at B1G conference championships, and his current 200 breast and 500 free times are both within a few tenths of scoring.

Swanson is great addition from a strong Nova Club Team. He will be a great swimmer from the team Up North. UVA swim fans another great swimmer that chose not to go to swim at UVA..NOVA was a pipeline to UVA as is Swanson’s High School.
