Women’s 200 Free Sets Up as Highlight on Day 3 in Greensboro (HEAT SHEETS)

2019 USA SWIMMING PRO SWIM SERIES – GREENSBORO

Grant House has dropped out of the 200 free on Friday morning at the 2019 USA Swimming Pro Swim Series in Greensboro. After dropping both of his entries on Thursday as well, it appears that House has not made the trip to North Carolina for the meet after all.

House, who is currently taking a redshirt season from the Arizona State Sun Devils to prepare for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials, was due to race 6 events this weekend in Greensboro. He, along with Arizona State newcomer Hali Flickinger and 4-time Olympic gold medalist Allison Schmitt were scheduled to be the only 3 swimmers from Sun Devil Swimming at the meet. Schmitt had an exciting season-opener in the 100 free, placing 2nd in 54.41 – faster than she was at the World Championships or US Nationals last summer.

Schmitt will swim the 200 free on Friday morning, which should be the highlight of the day’s events. That race will feature the collision between Stanford post-grad teammates Katie Ledecky, who won the 400 free on Thursday in 4:01.68, and Simone Manuel, who won the 100 free on Thursday in 53.44. In addition to Schmitt, the American Record holder who was on-form in a 2nd-place finish in the 100 free, and a pile of other big names including day 1 200 fly winner Flickinger, 15-year old Claire Tuggle, and an on-form Madisyn Cox.

The only other significant scratch on day 2 is 16-year old Grace Sheble from Nova of Virginia. She has dropped the 400 IM, where she was the 8th seed, which was due to be her only swim of the day. Her twin sister Caroline also scratched that race after both were no-shows for their swims on Thursday as well.

The battle in 200 free at Trials will be indeed very tough. Just 6 spots available but the number of swimmers who have realistic chances is three times more. This season discovered two more unusual contenders. Simone Manuel was really good in 200y but never was that successful in LCM. She was never better 1:57 and suddenly was selected to swim relay at WC showing 1:56.0. She is probably up for the record of 6 gold medals in Tokyo and will target 200 event seriously. Same ambitions to get 5 gold medals has Regan Smith with higher chances than Simons has. She suddenly started compete in 200 free significantly lowering her personal best at 1:58. I won’t be surprised if… Read more »

The one that misses out on the mixed medley relay will probably swim the heat and still receive a medal.

The breaststroke leg is almost always male, and the free leg female.
