Women’s Swimming and Diving Transfer Portal: Day 2 Live Updates

The women’s swimming and diving transfer portal window began yesterday, Wednesday, March 12th. Day 1 saw about 130 women enter the portal.

This is already close to the 191 total women that entered during the whole 45-day window a year ago. Last year also included about 40 graduate transfers as most swimmers that swam during the 2020-2021 COVID season have now used their eligibility.

Day 2 Morning Update

A few athletes entered the portal last night after the evening update. Among those include another woman from Arizona State. Kinley Wigle has now joined fellow teammates Haiden Schoessel and Kaitlyn McMorrow in the portal. Wigle just finished her sophomore season and did not swim at Pac-12s last year or Big-12s this year.

Reese Hinnerichs of Florida State has entered the portal as well. The first-year concluded her season in the dual meet against Florida.

Three-time America East ‘A’ finalist Alice Stenbeck of Bryant is also in the portal. The freshman finished her season swimming to 3rd in the 200 breast, 5th in the 100 breast, and 7th in the 200 IM. She was faster in prelims in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes with a 1:02.88 and 2:15.77.

Late Morning Update:

Florida’s Melissa Cowen has entered the portal. She last competed at midseason swimming a best time in the 100 breast with a 1:01.36 in prelims.

Virginia diver Ruby Borzekowski is the first of the team to enter the portal. The team announced earlier this month that it would cut its diving program. The team had 10 divers this season.

Another three women from Auburn have joined the portal. Eight women already entered from Auburn on day 1.

Afternoon Update:

Rebekka Luoto of Wagner College is the biggest name in the next batch of entries. Luoto went 3 for 3 in individual titles at the NEC Championships including a 1:00.31 100 breast, 2:16.27 200 breast, and 2:00.83 200 IM.

Purdue has two entries with Sarah Pophal and Sienna Nitke, both of whom did not swim at Big Tens.

Evening Update:

Auburn has a 12th women under the portal as Michele Kaner has entered. Virginia Tech’s Courtney Phillips joined the list from the Hokies as well.

Is there a list of swimmers who have Top 5 times in each event that are in the portal – that would be interesting to see….

Top 5 times in each event in Dl? If that’s what you are talking about, I think the answer to your question is that there are zero swimmers that fall into that category. Not only would that seem very unlikely prior to NCAA’s…but I also think it will be super unlikely even after NCAA’s. And, if it does happen, then it will probably only be a few women max.

I think they are asking for the 5 fastest that are IN the portal in each event.

Aaagh…I’ll bet you are right about that. And, as far as I know there is not a list of swimmers in the transfer portal that has been published. SwimSwam shared a limited list of names on their Day 1 and 2 coverage. And, the only other granular information I’ve seen is from the Springboard Creative IG that focuses on the Conference and Team level.

What about the impact on the middle of the pack names that we don’t recognize? Are they going to enter the portal when they get cut? What are their odds of getting picked up?

My swimmer is forced into a really tough choice, having been cut at a D1 state university. No one thinks of this university as a swim school, but it has ambitions in football and used to have a huge swim roster.
My swimmer never had NIL income aspirations, but was good enough to get a swim scholarship in the old math, and has a goal of making 2028 Trials.
They will finish “freshman” year with 55 credits towards a biotech degree in a program they… Read more »

Sooo… if teams are cutting in some cases 18- 35 swimmers in combined or women’s only programs, how may Assistant Coaches will be looking for new jobs?

That’s a really good question, and it will be interesting to see how things play out. I know that this link to this website has been shared previously https://www.collegeswimconnect.com/all , but it provides a snapshot of the current roster sizes for the 2024 / 25 season. So, for all rosters needing to get down to a maximum of 30 (and SEC Men down to 22), it seems logical to assume that there will be assistant coaching cuts as well. On the coaching impact side, it’s more about the reduction in roster sizes from current to the upcoming season. In most cases, it appears that the Roster reduction is even greater than the number of… Read more »

Not as many as you would think. They want lower swimmer to coach ratios. It is better training for the kids there. They want results so they need to make these places feel more like a HPC in Canada then a traditional college experience

If you are being recruited by IU as a transfer or even a recruit—I would reconsider this especially after yesterday. In case it hasn’t been clear enough from the portal entries of the whole girls freshmen class…STAY AWAY FROM IU!!

Wow… Big kudos to you for providing this information and level of detail on your IG! To my knowledge, you are the only source at this time providing this level of detail. Very enlightening and I would encourage everyone that has an interest in a “deeper dive” (sorry for the pun), to check out your IG! I understand if at this point you don’t want to provide the complete list of actual names…but it would be appreciated if you might expand the data for the summary of teams with athletes that have entered the portal. Thanks again…I know I’ll be checking your IG regularly for updates!

One observation that I found interesting from the data that you provided on your IG is that for the Spring for the P4 Conferences…there have been 114 athletes that have entered the portal. This compares to the approximately 105 Women that would have needed to be cut in P4 to get down to the 30 roster cap. Obviously, not all of those 114 athletes were necessarily cut…nor will everyone cut enter the portal. There will be some athletes that enter the portal on their own for their own personal reasons. And, I do think it’s interesting that the numbers at this point are very close.
