World Aquatics Expects US Streaming Issues for SC Worlds to Be Fixed for Finals

2022 FINA SHORT COURSE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

The live stream for the 2022 World Swimming Championships in Short Course Meters will begin working for the evening session of day 1 and is expected to work for the rest of the meet a representative for World Aquatics (formerly FINA) told SwimSwam on Tuesday morning.

The World Aquatics stream on YouTube is meant for countries where there is no rights-holding broadcaster airing the meet, which includes the United States. But American fans were left scrambling when they logged on Monday evening (US time) searching for the stream.

While it was working in other countries (including Australia, where it is already being broadcast on Channel Nine), the stream was geoblocked in the US. This forced American users to use VPNs like TunnelBear or bootlegged streams to watch the meet.

These sort of early-meet hiccups have become the unfortunate norm for elite swimming competitions, straining the dedicated fanbase’s desire to watch them. Fortunately, they usually get straightened away for the remainder of the meet.

A full list of where the meet can be watched around the world is available here.

In a world where pre-teens can produce, upload and share videos via TikTok, Instagram, Facebook etc, – FINA, NCAA ought to do better – its just not that hard

12:30am PST / 3:30am EST lmao. I don’t know why a sports organization already desperate for viewership in non-Olympic years would ever host a competition where 80% of the Earth’s population can’t watch it, but I digress.

Or you could put your big pants on and watch it in the middle of the night like we do in Australia 95% of the time for sporting events.

No. Billions shall not succumb to the whims of 20 million.

Are you just going to ignore the billions in East and South East Asia that are in similar timezones to us? There are way more people in this part of the world than in the Americas.

Why wasn’t it ready for day 1 trials?

Excellent question. It’s not like the world short course championships were a last-minute decision. Perhaps all their efforts were spent into their name change. But, if you are going to call yourself World Aquatics, shouldn’t you first be able to bring the aquatics to the world? The entire world. Unless I’m mistaken, the U.S. is part of the world. And when it comes to swimming, the most dominant part of the world in the sport’s history.

In 2022, where the world is connected, FINA – err, World Aquatics – continues to hold two tin cans, connected by a string. Instead of bringing your world together for a delegation to change a name, why not make sure you can bring swimming to the world?
