World Champion James Guy to Compete at Energy for Swim

World Champion James Guy has signed a contract to compete in the Energy for Swim 2018 meet.

A rule interpretation by FINA has classified the event as an international competition that needs FINA approval, something the event doesn’t have and doesn’t have time to obtain. FINA rules say that athletes could face bans between one and two years for competing in an unauthorized competition.

Meet organizers say contracted athletes will still be paid 50% of their promised appearance money if the meet is cancelled.

A number of high-profile athletes have publicly signed on to compete at the meet even after FINA’s warning, though it’s still unclear if the meet will proceed (or if all contracted athletes will compete) if the meet remains outside of FINA authorization.

What is the Energy for Swim meet’s format? How are they going to let that many swimmers swimming just for two days only and to keep this meet interesting for spectators? I don’t think this meet will be the fast one for many reasons. So something should be done to make it entertaining. Or the main excitement comes from competing in spite to FINA’s disapproval.

I think it would be cool if everyone wore rubber super suits at this meet.

Maybe they should do an exhibition event or 2 with them

Full body suits are so much better for the sport. People want to watch swimmers going fast, so let them. Not to mention the awesome design potential.

I seriously doubt that the swimmers look forward to spending half an hour putting on those “straitjackets” each time they’re racing, though. Hosszu would go bananas for sure after her sixth swim of the day, having wasted some three hours on that menial task alone. 😀

Surely hasn’t put on a brand new textile suit recently? 🙂 it takes 15 minutes minimum. I did enjoy putting the full bodies on and it never took me longer than the current ones. Only the thigh and hip/waist areas were critical to get through but that’s the same with the jammers.

I love how FINA threatened participating athletes with a worlds and/or olympics ban… Followed by more and more athletes signing up for the meet.

Your bluff has been called FINA. Go home.
