World Championship Medalist Giulio Zorzi Announces Retirement

2016 SHORT COURSE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

After winning the World Championship title in the men’s 50 breaststroke, South African Cameron van der Burgh mentioned in the post-race interview that this was the last race for his teammate Giulio Zorzi, and that tonight was all about him.

Zorzi surpirsed all at the 2013 World Championships in Barcelona, earning the bronze medal in the 50 breaststroke from lane 8. van der Burgh won that race by 0.01, and Zorzi won bronze by 0.01, in a particularly special race for the two of them. van der Burgh invited Zorzi up to the top of the podium to sing the South African anthem during the victory ceremony for that race.

Zorzi’s other international medal came in that same summer, when he won the gold medal at the World University Games in Kazan.

In his final meet this week, Zorzi placed 39th in the 100 breast before finishing in a tie for 5th in the 50 breast final tonight, earning a best time of 26.13. His LC best is from that World Championship medal swim in 2013 at 27.04.

van der Burgh won the race in 25.64, with Peter Stevens of Slovenia taking silver in 25.85 and Felipe Lima of Brazil the bronze in 25.98.
