World Record Holder Andrii Govorov Races In Germany

29-year-old Andrii Govorov of Ukraine is back in the water, competing locally in Germany at a competition entitled International Dr. Otto Fahr Swim Meet.

The multi-international medalist took on his pet event of the men’s 50m fly tonight, firing off a winning time of 23.46. That not only beat the field here in Sindelfingen by well over 2 seconds but it also established a new competition record in the process.

Govorov owns the World Record in this long course 50 fly event with the 22.27 he produced at the 2018 Sette Colli Trophy. Since then, the man took 50m fly silver at this year’s European Championships, posting a time of 23.01 there in Budapest. that left him only .01 off the podium, with Hungary’s Szebasztian Szabo winding up on top in 23.00.

Govorov has been training in Germany under coach Luther Jones since 2021, about two years removed from having undergone shoulder surgery in 2019 to address SLAP syndrome. Per The Mayo Clinic, SLAP stands for superior labrum anterior and posterior lesions, which can be indicated by pain with specific shoulder positions, pain during overhead activities, as well as overall impaired shoulder strength.

When we spoke with Govorov last October, he conveyed that the Paris 2024 Olympic Games are embedded in his plans, which also include eyes on the closer 2022 FINA World Championships.

Shorter-term, Govorov will be racing the men’s 50m free at this meet tomorrow.
