World record-setting Minna Atherton of Australia has been honored with UniSport’s ‘Most Outstanding Sporting Achievement by a Student-Athlete’ award for 2019.
The annual UniSport Australia Awards recognize performances and contributions in the university sport and the international sporting arena by student-athletes attending universities nationwide. Past winners in the swimming realm include Holly Barratt, Cate Campbell, Grant Hackett, Blake Cochrane, Matthew Cowdrey, and Emma McKeon.
20-year-old Atherton took home a gold and two silver medals at the 2019 World Aquatic Championships in Gwangju, Korea before crushing a short course meters 100 backstroke world record in October 2019. She did so while representing London Roar during the inaugural season of the International Swimming League.
Last year Atherton also notched a new Commonwealth and Australian national record in the short course meters 50 backstroke and 200 backstroke events.
Atherton earned her Bachelor of Biomedical Science at Bond University and the school recognized her award on Facebook this week.
