Before today, Louisville’s Kelsi Worrell already held four of the ten top fastest 100 yard butterfly swims in history. After this morning’s ACC prelims swim, a 50.23, she now owns half. Her swim this morning tied a Natalie Coughlin mark from 2011 for the sixth-fastest swim in history.
We all knew that Worrell would go fast in her signature event (it is her senior year, and Omaha looms ever closer), so perhaps the most exciting swim of the prelims came from University of North Carolina junior Hellen Moffitt, who just became the 6th-fastest swimmer in the history of the event. Before today, she was ranked outside of the top 50, so this monster performance came as a huge surprise. Moffitt clocked 50.67 this morning to take down her old personal best, a 51.98, by 1.31 seconds.
This swim rocketed her ahead of the likes of Jenny Thompson, Felicia Lee, Elaine Breeden, and Christina Magnusen, among other swimming greats to a the 6th-fastest slot. Moffitt now only stands behind Amanda Sims, Dana Vollmer, Rachel Komisarz, Natalie Coughlin, and Worrell herself in the all-time rankings.
Tonight the duo will battle it out for the ACC Championship.
