WRMS to Host International Coaching Clinic

Release provided to SwimSwam courtesy of W Ross Macdonald Swimming:

Dr. Brent Rushall is coming to Brantford March 22-23, 2014 to present a clinic on Ultra Short Race Pace Training. Dr. Rushall will also cover many key aspects of technical development for swimmers.

Rushall believes, and research supports that long accepted training methodologies for competitive swimming are “largely irrelevant” – even detrimental to swimming performance. He believes that relying on stroke drills to “teach” swimming technique is responsible for the obvious lack of technical development in a majority of the programs in North America.

Ultra Short Race Pace Training (USRPT) is a training methodology that focuses on maximizing training volumes at event specific race pace. The 2 day clinic will present an alternative to currently accepted   teaching and training programs for competitive swimming.

The clinic will offer an early look at what Rushall (and WRMS staff ) believes is the future of training for competitive swimmers.  The clinic will include plenty of time for what is expected to be a lively and sometimes heated discussion of  the benefits of  USRPT.

The clinic is focused on USRPT for Coaches but Senior Swimmers and Parents are welcome to attend.

Are there other elite athletes at the age group level (or beyond for that matter) besides Andrew who purport to follow the USRPT methodology? I’d be more interested if the one person generating interest in USRPT wasn’t a physical anomaly that would most likely excel with any traditional training.

Do you know if there will be video of the clinic, or if they will be allowing others to take video of the clinic. At the very least will swimswam do an article breaking down what was talked about and the science behind USRPT?

The Lawrence, Kansas event in January will be recorded and a USRPT DVD series will be produced and distributed shortly thereafter.
