MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams defeated Villanova and Iowa State on Saturday at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park in Morgantown.
“I am really pleased with the results,” head coach Vic Riggs said. “We’ve had some really good training the past few weeks, and today we saw the results from that work. It was a special day for our seniors and I’m glad we came away with three wins for them.”
The men’s swimming and diving team (2-2, 1-0 Big 12) defeated Villanova, 234-66. The women’s swimming and diving team (2-3, 1-1 Big 12) defeated Villanova, 173.50-125.50, and beat Iowa State, 191-108.
In the diving well, senior Sara Haggerty set a new program record on the women’s platform with a final score of 287.85. This feat comes after she set a program record on the women’s platform against Pitt on Jan. 13.
Overall, West Virginia won 21 events. The men’s team won 13 events and the women’s team won eight.
Senior Danny Berlitz led the men’s team, winning two individual events. Berlitz finished first in the 200-yard backstroke (1:45.64) and the 400-yard individual medley (3:48.60). He also was part of the relay team that won the 200-yard medley (1:28.00).
Senior Justin Heimes won the men’s 100-yard backstroke (48.73) and placed third in the 200-yard backstroke (1:49.25). He was part of the relay team that won the 200-yard medley, and the relay team that won the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:04.87) event.
In the men’s 1,650-yard freestyle, the Mountaineers had the top three swimmers. Senior Ivan Puskovitch won the event with a 15:26.34, senior William Mullen placed second (15:34.22) and freshman Trevor Hudson finished in third (15:58.35).
Sophomore Ada Szwabinska led the women’s team, winning two individual events. She placed first in the 50-yard freestyle (22.90) and the 100-yard freestyle (50.60). Szwabinska was part of the relay team that won the 200-yard medley (1:41.37) and the relay team that won the 400-yard freestyle (3:25.09) event.
Sophomore Mia Cheatwood won the women’s 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.15) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:11.92). She was part of the relay team that won the 200-yard medley and the relay team that won the 400-yard freestyle event.
In the diving well, junior Sarah Krusinski and sophomore Abigail Sullivan placed first and second on the women’s 1-meter, respectively. Krusinski finished with a 288.70 and Sullivan scored a 278.10.
Krusinski scored a 288.70 on the women’s 3-meter to finish in second place. Sullivan scored a 283.90 to place third.
For the men’s team, junior Glenn Eloriaga scored a 334.30 on the 3-meter to win the event. Freshman Owen Recker placed second with a 314.65
On the 1-meter, Recker took first with a 334.05 while Eloriaga placed second with a 306.55.
West Virginia returns to the pool to compete in the 2024 Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships from Feb. 27-March 2. The championships will take place at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park in Morgantown.

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Both Villanova men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams fell to West Virginia, but the women picked up a win over Iowa State on Saturday at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park. The women split their day with a 180-119 win over the Cyclones and a 173.5-125.5 loss to the Mountaineers. The men fell 234-66.
All-told, Villanova left Morgantown with seven wins, six of those belonging to the women. Audrey Pastorek logged a Backstroke sweep with wins in the 100 Back (55.21) and the 200 Back (1:59.61). That 200 Back time is the 10th fastest in program history, giving her three of the team’s top 10 times. Molly Benson also had a two-win day, tying for first in the 200 Free in 1:50.11 with WVU’s Gabriela Martin De La Torre before edging her for a 4:57.18 win in the 500 Free.
Marlene Blanke logged the first win of the day for Villanova with a 17:02.61 finish in the 1650 Free, boasting a five-second lead on the rest of the field. Charlie Hinckley was the victor in the men’s 500 Free with a 4:31.12.
Mary Kate Farrell was over a second behind Benson and Martin De La Toree in the 200 Free, taking third in 1:51.51.
Two of the top three spots in the women’s 100 Back belonged to the Blue and White with Pastorek and Arabella Lee finishing in second (56.05). On the men’s side, Hinckley finished third in 50.70, just half a second out of second place.
Maggie Kleinsmith fell into a close battle for second in the 100 Breast but was bested by one hundredth of a second, touching third in 1:03.68. Katie White picked up a big win in the 200 Fly, finishing with nearly a two-second lead over the field in 1:59.86. Nolan Danus finished third in the men’s 200 Fly that saw just 86-hundredths of a second between the top three finishers. He touched in 1:50.91.
The 50 Free saw a pair of top-three finishes for the ‘Cats. Lainey Quinones touched second in the women’s at 23.44 while Patrick Hemingway finish third in the men’s at 21.47. The duo also had top-three showings in the 100 Free. Quinones was second in 50.83, a new personal best, while Hemingway was third in 46.92.
Nicholas Jubilee picked up a pair of third-place dives, scoring a 299.00 in the 1-meter and a 309.15 in the 3-meter.
Lee had a second-place finish in the women’s 100 Fly (55.80). The Wildcats had a pair of top-three finishes in the 400 IM with Anna Farley touching second in the women’s with a new personal best time of 4:23.45 and Justin Nowicki tapping third in the men’s at 4:03.89.
The women had a pair of second-place relays on the day, finishing just behind West Virginia in both. For the 200 Medley, the team of Pastorek, Kleinsmith, Lee and Quinones pieced together a 1:42.39 finish. The 400 Free Relay team of Alyssa McHale, Lauryn Johnson, Benson and Quinones went 3:26.63, edging Iowa State’s group by just over two-tenths of a second. In the men’s 400 Free Relay, Gavin Jones, Mikey Thurk, Hinckley and Hemingway finished third in 3:06.97, just half a second out of second.
Villanova is back in action next week for back-to-back days of events. The ‘Cats head to Penn State on Feb. 2 before coming back home on Saturday to honor eight seniors at Sprintfest.

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The Iowa State swimming and diving team (3-5, 0-2 Big 12) suffered two close losses in their three-team meet contest against West Virginia (2-3, 1-1 Big 12) and Villanova (4-3-1, 2-0 Big East).
Kate Mitchell was a bright spot for the Cyclones, winning 3-meter diving with a score of 291.30. It’s the second meet in a row where Mitchell has broken a score of 290 in the event after setting a PR of 294.10 against TCU.
Joscelyn Farner was the highest scoring Cyclone in 1-meter diving, securing a zone diving cut score of 268.55 that earned her third place.
Brinley Horras earned two third-place finishes in both the 1650 free and the 500 free for the Cyclones. Her efforts secured six points, moving Horras up to No. 18 on the all-time points leaderboard with 548 points across her career.
Freshman Emma Kuhn set a new PR of 56.28 in the 100 backstroke that earned her third place in the event. Kuhn was one tenth of a second from setting a new PR in the 200 backstroke later in the meet.
Fallon DeWitt earned second in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:01.86.
Andie Quirke led the Cyclones in both the 50 and 100 free with third-place finishes in both events. Quirke was .09 seconds away from breaking her PR of 50.90 in the 100 free.
Mallory Miller (2:07.58) and Sydney Jackson (2:07.70) set new season highs in the 200 yard fly for Iowa State.
Iowa State will return to Beyer Pool on Friday, Feb. 9 at 6 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 10 at 10 a.m. to take on Big 12 rival Kansas. Senior day will take place on Saturday around 30 minutes prior to the start of the meet.
