Cowgirl swimming and diving defeated the New Mexico State Aggies by a score of 157-139 at the NM State Swimming and Diving Complex on Friday evening.
Sophomore diver Karla Contreras opened the meet with a win in the 1-meter event, scoring a 290.55 to exceed the second-place Aggie diver by more than 30 points. Freshman Kristyn Bobka won the third-straight event for the Cowgirls in the 1000 freestyle, clocking a time of 10:44.55. Kara Guenther placed second with a time of 10:49.31.

“Today was a lot of fun and we had a lot of people who swam unique races for us,” UW head coach Dave Denniston said. “This meet sets us up really well for tomorrow, against a team with really fast swimmers. Tomorrow’s dual should be closer, but overall I’m really happy with the team’s performance to win this one.”

Junior Isobel Ryan earned a win in the 100 backstroke, touching the wall in 57.94 ahead of Burke who placed second with a time of 58.40. Harutjunjan won the 100 breaststroke recording a time of 1:04.83, followed by McLean-Leonard who placed first with a time of 2:09.15 in the 200 butterfly. Senior Rachel McKivigan logged the fastest time in the 50 freestyle with a mark of 24.21, more than half a second faster than the rest of the field. Contreras won her second board on the 3-meter, scoring a 294.90. Burke earned a victory in the 100 freestyle with a time of 53.25. Blattner earned her second win of the day in the 200 backstroke, finishing in 2:06.62. Sophomore Talita Te Flan won Wyoming’s final race of the day in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:04.96.

The Wyoming women will be back in action tomorrow against New Mexico at 12 p.m. MT.

New Mexico State swimming and diving fell to Wyoming at the NMSU Swimming and Diving Complex on Friday. Despite the loss, the Aggies took first place in five events.

“Wyoming has some really tough competitors on their roster,” assistant coach Rachel Judge said. “We knew going into this meet that any chance we had of beating them would come down to our girls being 100% on, confident and ready to go. We fell short today of where I know we are as a team, but still had some really gutsy and impressive swims. Additionally, our divers were able to have a great showing on both boards. Moving forward we have three weeks of practice before our next contest against Idaho, which gives us plenty of time to get back to the grind of training and really prepare for that dual on the road.”

Junior MacKinna Hauff finished second in the one-meter diving event with a score of 258.70. Raina Brommer came in third place with a score of 242.55 while Sheridan Decker finished fourth with a final score of 240.70.

The team of Eliana BeaudryHanna McGowanReagan Nentwich and Picabo Bender placed second in the 400-yard medley relay for the Aggies, clocking in at 3:55.89. Gabrielle SanchezLauren WoodKatherine Harston and Johanna Pettersson finished in fourth with a time of 3:58.74.

In the 1000-yard freestyle, Lilly Araujo finished third with a time of 10:52.26 while Alix Knagg came in fourth with a time of 10:57.57. Melissa Rogers closed out the event in sixth-place, posting a time of 11:29.02.

Picabo Bender won the 200-yard freestyle for the second consecutive week with a time of 1:54.49. Grace Laporte (2:00.99) and Sina Wegel (2:02.45) finished fifth and sixth, respectively.

In the 100-yard backstroke event, Beaudry came in third-place for the Aggies when she recorded a time of 58.54. Gabrielle Sanchez finished with a time of 59.70, which was good for fourth-place. Pettersson clocked at1:01.15 for a sixth-place finish.

McGowan finished in second-place for NM State with a time of 1:05.16. Wood (1:06.55) finished just behind in third while Ashley Reynolds (1:08.14) finished fifth.

Nentwich clocked a time of 2:09.49 for a second-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly event.
Harston came in third with a time of 2:09.61 while Lanie McAlpin finished fifth with a final time of 2:12.68.

In the 50-yard freestyle event, Hatfield finished a close second after posting a time 24.73 followed by Makena Sutherland in third with a time of 25.03. Freshman Olivia Bender placed fourth, clocking a time of 25.12.

Brommer concluded the three-meter diving event with a final score of 280.30 to finish second while Hauff came in third with a time of 261.10.

Picabo Bender finished second in the 100-yard freestyle clocking in at 53.69, followed by Hatfield in fifth with a time of 56.86.

In the 200-yard backstroke event, Knagg came in third-place, clocking a time of 2:08.04. Sanchez (2:09.77) and McAlpin (2:10.47) placed fourth and fifth, respectively.

In the 200-yard breaststroke, Wood held on for the win, clocking in a time 2:22.45. McGowan came in second with a posted time of 2:23.81. Barbora Krizanova finished in fifth with a time of 2:31.53.

New Mexico State’s Picabo Bender finshed the 500-yard freestyle event in fourth, posting a time of 5:14.11. Laporte was not too far behind with a time of 5:17.87 for a fifth-place finish.

Nentwich brought home the win for the Aggies in the 100-yard butterfly, recording a time of 57.77. Harston came in third-place with a time of 59.07 while Beaudry swam a time of 59.85 to finish fourth.

In the 200-yard IM, Knagg posted a time of 2:11.93 for a first-place finish. Wood finished second, clocking at 2:12.67 with McAlpin coming in third for a time of 2:13.53.

In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the team of Ruby Rodriguez, Hatfield, Sutherland and Pettersson finished in the top spot with a final time of 1:38.44 for New Mexico State. Olivia BenderLindsey Muiznieks, Beaudry and McGowan were a close second with a time of 1:40.77.

The Aggies return to the Swimming and Diving Complex on Friday, Oct. 27, as they host their Alumni Meet. Events begin at 4 p.m.
