GOLDEN, Colo. – Saturday morning saw the Colorado School of Mines Men’s and Women’s Swimming teams face off against NCAA Division I Wyoming while also celebrating Senior Day inside the Mines Natatorium.
The final scores showed a Wyoming sweep of Mines with a final tally of 137-75 for the women and 130.5-83.5 for the men. However, Oredigger Head Coach Claire McDaniel‘s goal for the day was to celebrate the seniors and have fun swimming. Nick Delany, Sam LaPrade, Josh Lee, Nathan O’Neil, Joe Peak, Braden Whitmarsh, Claire Lautman, and Meghan Slowey were honored before the meet and proceeded to go out in style.
Delany’s day featured four different appearances. He helped the men’s 400-medley relay touch in 3:41.91. Then, Delany raced the 200-breast in 2:16.84 and took #5 in the 200-free with a time of 1:51.08. He rounded out his day in the men’s 200-freestyle relay where the Orediggers took second-place points at a pace of 1:28.49.
LaPrade, a NCAA Championships hopeful, notched five races on the day. His 50-back of 24.00 was good enough for silver. He followed with an exhibition in the 50-breast and posted a season-best 29.82. LaPrade continued living the sprint life, posting a 22.22 in the 50-free and a 23.80 in the 50-fly. His last race of the day was the men’s 200-free style relay as part of the quartet that brought in first-place points thanks to a 1:24.94.
Lee stayed busy for the Orediggers as well with five races of his own. He joined Delany in the 400-medley relay and then finished the 50-breast in 26.32. A 23.35 in the 50-free and 25.60 in the 50-fly carried Lee into his final race inside Mines Natatorium. It was the men’s 100-IM where he touched in 58.03. Teammate O’Neil was also part of the men’s 400-medley relay. We’ll give you a hint, the fourth swimmer on that team was also a senior. O’Neil’s other races included a 50-breast (29.01), a 50-fly (25.37), and a 100-IM (57.05).
For Peak, it was a leg of the 400-medley relay that finished #3 overall in 3:28.34. He rolled right into the 200-fly and took #3 at a blazing 1:56.79. His 22.72 in the 50-free was an exhibition. However, Peak’s 1:47.33 in the 200-free was not an exhibition and hauled in second-place points for the Orediggers. His Mines home finales was the 200-freestyle relay that brought in second-place points thanks to a 1:28.49.
Whitmarsh rounded out the senior performances on the men’s side, alphabetically speaking. He was the anchor for the 400-medley relay, produced a 24.63 in the 50-fly, claimed #2 in the 100-IM at a 54.69 clip, and finished the day in the 200-freestyle relay.
On the women’s side, Slowey competed in her signature race, the 1650-free and took #2 in 18:13.11. She went against fellow senior Lautman in the first heat of the 50-breast where Lautman touched in 33.86 and Slowey in 34.50. Slowey returned to the freestyle and took first-place points in the 200-free (2:01.51) and second-place points as part of the women’s 200-freestyle relay. Lautman skipped on the distance and went for the springs with some signature events of her own mixed in. After beating Slowey in the 50-breast, Lautman turned in a 28.29 in the 50-free. Her 200-breast appearance resulted in a time of 2:38.72. Her day finished in the 100-IM with a 1:09.43.
Also notable were seven different pool records. Wyoming accounted for all of them. The pool records that fell were the men’s 50-back, women’s 50-breast, women’s 500-breast, men’s and women’s 50-fly, and both 100-IM marks.
The next action for the Mines men and women will be the 2023 RMAC Swimming & Diving Championships running Feb. 8-11 in Grand Junction, Colo. A full preview and any live coverage will be released the week leading up to the next event.
