GRANVILLE, Ohio – Xavier men’s and women’s swimming collected 13 first-place finishes in the final dual meet of the Fall at Denison, with the women picking up the win over the Big Red while the men fell.

Xavier will be in action next when the Musketeers travel to Cleveland State for the CSU Magnus Cup, running from Nov. 18-20 at the Busbey Natatorium.

  • Xavier’s men opened up the meet with a second place finish in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:32.72.
  • Daniel Stroh led Xavier in the 1000 free with a time of 10:17.75, placing fourth.
  • Andrew Martin took the top spot in two events, taking the 100 free in a time of 45.78 and the 200 free with a time of 1:41.44.
  • Jon Bernard picked up two second place finishes, with a time of 51.32 in the 100 back and a time of time of 2:05.02 in the 200 breast.
  • Ethan Saunders took second in the 100 breast with a time of 58.01.
  • Jack Parker led Xavier in the 200 fly with a time of 1:56.64, placing fourth.
  • Christian Thomas won the 50 free with a time of 21.08 and led Xavier in the 100 fly with a time of 51.42, placing third.
  • Ben Quon took the top spot in the 200 back with a time of 1:53.68.

GRANVILLE, Ohio. (October 30, 2021) – The No. 1 nationally-ranked Denison University men’s swimming team posted nine event victories, and that was enough to propel the Big Red to a 158-103 victory over NCAA Division I Xavier University during the Big Red’s first home meet of the season at the Trumbull Aquatics Center. Denison has now defeated Xavier six times in a row.

Richie Kurlich led Denison with three event wins on Saturday (100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke, 200 medley relay) while Chris LuusEthan Bevill and Sam Myaard each won two events.

The 2021-22 home opener for the Big Red was kicked off by Luus, Kurlich, Bevill and Trey Ike winning first place in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:32.32.

In the first individual event of the day, the 1000 freestyle, Denison took each of the top-three spots as Myaard was first with a time of 9:41.35, Tyler Distenfeld was second with a time of 9:52.64, and Christian McIntire was third with a time of 10:17.53.

Next was the 200 freestyle, where Kyle Verstandig was second with a time of 1:43.75.

In the 100 backstroke, Luus picked up his second event win of the day with a time of 50.74 seconds, and then Kurlich earned his second win of the day with a time of 57.20 seconds in the 100 breaststroke.

In the 200 butterfly, Denison again went 1-2-3 as Noah Houskeeper was first with a time of 1:53.66, Eric Chimes was second with a time of 1:54.71, and Bevill was third with a time of 1:55.00.

In the 50 freestyle, Ike (21.18 seconds) was second, Liam Picozzi (21.69 seconds) was third and Aidan Lane (21.82 seconds) was fourth, and in the 100 freestyle, Verstandig (46.93 seconds) was second while Ike (47.17 seconds) was third.

In the 200 backstroke, Picozzi was second with a time of 1:55.77.

Kurlich earned win number three for him on the day with an NCAA Division III National “B” standard time of 2:04.25 in the 200 breaststroke.

In the 500 freestyle, Denison took each of the top three spots for the third time on the day as Myaard earned his second win with a time of 4:44.17, followed by Ryan Foreback in second with a time of 4:46.11 and McIntire in third with a time of 4:46.29.

Bevill (50.52 seconds) won the 100 butterfly while Houskeeper (50.56 seconds) was second, and then Patrick Daly won the final individual event of the day, the 200 IM, with a time of 1:54.63.

The 200 free relay then ended the day as Picozzi, Ike, Kurlich and Verstandig were second with a time of 1:23.64. Luus, Nicholas Czepukaitis, Houskeeper and Chimes were third with a time of 1:25.29. Dhinal WeerasingheChristian Narcelles, Myaard and Lucas Conrads were fourth with a time of 1:27.50.

There were no diving events held during this dual meet.

Denson returns to action next weekend on Saturday, November 6, when they host No. 2 nationally-ranked Kenyon College at 10 a.m. The meet will be streamed live by the Denison Sports Network beginning at 9:45 a.m.

GRANVILLE, Ohio. (October 30, 2021) – Despite garnering six first-place finishes and 20 finishes in the top-three, the No. 3 nationally-ranked Denison University women’s swimming team suffered a close 137.5-123.5 loss to NCAA Division I Xavier University during the Big Red’s first home meet of the 2021-22 season on Saturday afternoon at the Trumbull Aquatics Center.

Emma Pritchett led Denison with a pair of wins in the 100 butterfly and in the 200 butterfly.

The meet was kicked off by the 200 medley relay in which Lauren RichnerZoe BarclayEmma Berdelman and Amber Croonquist finished third with a time of 1:50.60.

In the first individual event of the meet, the 1000 freestyle, Denison’s Alix O’Brien took first place with a time of 10:26.76, followed by Tara Witkowski in second place with a time of 10:47.71.

Next was the 200 freestyle, which saw Taryn Wisner finish in first place with a time of 1:54.97, followed by Tara Culibrk in second place with at time of 1:55.22, pulling Denison into first place (31-23) as a team for the first time on the day.

In the 100 backstroke, Annalise Cheshire (1:00.26), Claire Moody (1:00.88) and Sophie Kannee (1:02.59) finished in third, fourth and fifth place, respectively.

In the 100 breaststroke, Devin Javens finished in first place with a time of 1:07.64, and was followed by Christina Crane in second place with a time of 1:08.41.

In the 200 butterfly, Pritchett took first place with a time of 2:08.10 while Nikki Barnas was second with a time of 2:09.65.

Grace Kadlecik finished second in the 50 freestyle with at time of 24.65 seconds, and in the 100 freestyle, Culibrk (52.98 seconds) was second while Avery Vogen (53.74 seconds) was third.

After the 200 backstroke, Xavier took back the lead (84.5-83.5) as Moody (2:08.92) finished third and Kacmarek (2:09.95) was fourth.

However, the Big Red bounced right back to retake the lead (94.5-92.5) after Esme Wright finished first in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:27.13.

In the 500 freestyle, Wisner (5:03.14) finished second, O’Brien (5:03.17) was third, and Tara Witkowski (5:16.17) was fourth.

Pritchett won the 100 butterfly with a time of 57.16 seconds, however, Xavier took back the lead for good (124.5-119.5) following the 200 IM in which Javens (2:13.35) was third and Rebecca Martin (2:13.46) was fourth.

The home opener for Denison was capped off by the 200 free relay, which saw Culibrk, Kadlecik, Vogen and Wright take second place with a time of 1:36.69.

There were no diving events held during this dual meet.

Denson returns to action next weekend on Saturday, November 6, when they host No. 1 nationally-ranked Kenyon College at 10 a.m. The meet will be streamed live by the Denison Sports Network beginning at 9:45 a.m.
