Xavier Women, IUPUI Men Go Undefeated At Butler Duals

FISHERS, Ind. – Xavier men’s and women’s won a combined 13 events at the Butler Double Dual to open the 2023-24 season. The Musketeers went 6-1 in head-to-head match-ups for the day, with the women coming out on top at 4-0 and the men finishing second with a 2-1 record.

Xavier will be back in action next weekend when the Musketeers opens up dual action at Louisville on Friday, September 29 at 3:00 p.m.

WOMEN’S NOTABLE

  • Xavier took the top two spots in the 400 medley relay, with Kali FischerJordyn LiblerErin Ritz and Olivia Oyster setting a time of 3:51.42 to place first.
  • Abby Bocian placed second in the 1000 free with a time of 10:55.73.
  • Xavier had three of the top four finishers in the 200 free, led by Clara Keiser who set a time of 1:56.56 to place second. Alexis Worrall placed third and Mary Sweetman finished fourth.
  • Olivia Oyster won the 50 free with a time of 24.70.
  • Jordyn Libler took the top spot in the 200 IM, finishing in a time of 2:11.58. Libler also won the 200 breast, finishing in 2:24.33.
  • Xavier swept the top three spots in the 200 fly, with Norah Simich winning with a time of 2:05.54. Erin Ritz placed second and Ava Tenhundfeld finished third.
  • Reese Turner won the 100 free with a time of 54.33. Clara Keiser tied for second.
  • Musketeers claimed the top four spots in the 200 back, led by Kali Fischer, who finished in a time of 2:04.07. Charlie RameyJulia Sweetman and Abby Bocian followed her in.
  • Mary Sweetman led Xavier in the 500 free, placing second with a time of 5:19.37.
  • The Musketeers closed out the meet with another first place finish, with Olivia OysterClara KeiserAlexis Worrall and Kali Fischer taking the 400 free in a time of 3:33.06.
  • Xavier’s women won eight of 11 events, going 4-0 in head-to-head match-ups. The Musketeers topped Saint Louis (148.50-90.50), UIndy (181-54), Butler (181.50-41.50) and Bellarmine (194-29).

MEN’S NOTABLE

  • Matthew AdaninEthan SaundersAiden Leamer and Kyle Hudson opened the meet on the men’s side with a win in the 400 medley relay, setting a time of 3:27.55.
  • Ryan Knipp led Xavier in the 1000 free, placing second with a time of 9:52.43.
  • Kyle Hudson tied for the top spot in the 200 free, setting a time of 1:43.14. Luke Peterson placed third.
  • CJ Sorensen won the 50 free, setting a time of 21.70.
  • Michael Benington placed second in the 200 IM, setting a time of 1:57.59. Benington also led Xavier in the 200 back with a time of 1:56.97, placing fourth.
  • Aiden Leamer won the 200 fly, setting a time of 1:52.89. Seth Kibler placed second.
  • CJ Sorensen led Xavier in the 100 free, finishing second with a time of 47.48. Gage Hannewyk finished third.
  • Luke Peterson placed second in the 500 free with a time of 4:43.23. Ryan Knipp placed third.
  • Nathan Wall finished second in the 200 breast with a time of 2:08.50.
  • Kyle HudsonCJ SorensenGage Hannewyk and Ethan Saunders closed out the meet with a first place finish in the 400 free relay, setting a time of 3:09.76.
  • Xavier’s men won five of 11 racing events, placing second with a 2-1 record, including head-to-head wins over Bellarmine (173-32) and Saint Louis (141-90). The Musketeers fell narrowly to UIndy (120.50-116.50).

INDIANAPOLIS –The Bulldogs hosted the Butler Double Dual on Sunday afternoon at Fishers High School. Head Coach Maurice Stewart tabbed Kate Schilling the BU Swimmer of the Meet for her performances in the 200 IM, 200 Fly and 200 Breast. Butler defeated Bellarmine and IUPUI opening weekend marking the first time the ‘Dawgs have beat two teams at this meet!

“We had a solid season opener today,” Stewart added. “Everyone raced well, and it was a competitive team effort from start to finish which was great to see.”

Schilling had three BIG EAST qualifying times on Sunday. She led Butler in the 200 IM with a second place finish, clocking in at 2:12.89. Grace Crane (2:18.93) and Jamie Gindorf (2:21.49) joined her in the event to finish 13th and 14th respectively.

In the 200 Fly, Schilling finished seventh with a time of 2:14.35. Lily Schwelgin and Sadie Brown joined her with times of 2:20.14 and 2:21.45 for 12th and 14th. Schilling was also the top BU finisher in the 200 Breast. Her sixth place finish was impressive with a time of 2:31.13. Ava McGonigle also had a BIG EAST qualifying time in the event (2:32.12).

Emily Landwehr also had a great day in the pool, leading the team in the 50 Free, 100 Free and swimming with the 400 Medley Relay Team. Landwehr took second place in the 50 Free with a BIG EAST qualifying time of 24.82. Alani Hightower-Bend was close behind in third (24.83) while Olivia Stotts placed fifth (25.23).

In the 100 Free, Landwehr finished fourth with another BIG EAST qualifying time of 54.66. Stotts clocked in at 56.17 for seventh and Lauren Bergman finished 13th (57.02).

The 400 Medley Relay Team of Gianna Leffler, Landwehr, Bergman and Hightower-Bend placed third on Sunday with a time of 3:59.88. It marked the first time Butler has swam under 4:00 in that event during the regular season! Leffler’s lead-off BIG EAST qualifying time set the pace (1:00.57) and Landwehr had a regular season personal-best split in the breast (1:06.9). Bergman hit the pool next for a 59.5 fly and Hightower-Bend had a solid split in the free (52.8).

Butler finished fifth in the 400 Free Relay. The team of Bergman, Stotts, Elizabeth Naylor, and Hightower-Bend posted a time of 3:42.69.

Sadie Brown swam in the 1000 Free for the first time in her BU career and came up with a sixth place finish (11:15.17). Caroline Zimner was also active for BU in the race to place ninth with a time of 11:22.50.

Additional BIG EAST qualifying times were set in the 200 Back for BU. Caroline Zimner touched the wall at 2:12.65 and Leffler was close behind at 2:13.18.

Naylor, Olivia McKee and Avery Piel were the top ‘Dawgs in the 200 Free. Naylor led the trio with a time of 2:02.91 and McKee was behind her at 2:03.80.

Naylor and McKee also swam in the 500 Free for BU. McKee finished 10th (5:36.86) and Naylor placed 13th (5:41.80).
