Xu Jiayu Tops 100 Backstroke Final with 52.88 at Chinese Olympic Trials

CHINESE OLYMPIC TRIALS #1

In the men’s 100 backstroke final, two-time Olympian Xu Jiayu touched the wall 1st with a time of 52.88 and more than a 1.5 second lead over the field. This time is slightly off his season-best of 52.35 from March. The Chinese National Record-holder was the only swimmer to crack the FINA ‘A’ cut. Jiayu won silver in this event at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

2016 Olympian Chen Jie won the women’s 100 backstroke final with a lifetime best time of 59.75,  out touching 2nd place finisher Peng Xuwei by .14. Both swimmers undercut the FINA ‘A’ cut and 18-year-old Xuwei was right on her season-best time of 59.82 from March.

Tang Qianting took the women’s 100 breaststroke final by storm, winning the event with a time of 1:06.82 and getting under the FINA ‘A’ cut by .25. This was a little ways off her semifinals swim where she became China’s 2nd fastest 100 breaststroke ever with a 1:06.04. That swim ranks her #7 in the world this year.

Both 2016 Olympic bronze medalist Wang Shun and Ji Xinjie beat the FINA ‘A’ cut in the 200 freestyle final, finishing in 1st and 2nd place, respectively, with times of 1:46.55 and 1:46.75. Shun beat his season-best time from January by about .40 while Xinjie undercut his season-best 200 IM from March by about .20. It’s important to note that Sun Yang is pre-qualified in the 200 freestyle, per China’s selection procedures, as he won gold in the event at the 2019 World Championships.

After posting the 6th all-time fastest 100 butterfly in yesterday’s finals session, Zhang Yufei scratched 200 free semifinal.

Asian record from Yang Junxuan in the 200 final: 1:54.57

1:54s are becoming quite crowded.

Does this mean that since two swimmers were under the A cut in the 200 free that Sun Yang has no shot to swim the individual event in Tokyo?

Did Wang Jianjiahe compete at 200FR? If yes, did she make to the final? Will Li Bingjie compete at 1500? I have never seen before how swimmers do 200 – 1500 double in one final session of the important meet.

Really? You’ve never seen it before? Can’t even think of one swimmer who might have done the 200 1500 double ?

Can you imagine that? 😀 At Olympic trials? Never. Can you please give me an example? With splits if possible. Thanks. Just want to check if it was 200 that was swum slower to save for the next 1500. Or it was slower than usual 1500 after strong 200. Or such a double didn’t affect neither races.
I’m still learning and not ashamed of that. And in my next story about swimmers’ strong will I promise to make a reference to your example mentioning your name. 😀

And?
In Kazan it was 1500 final – 200 semi-final and only by laziness of other swimmers she got to the 200 final. She told that after first turn already she didn’t feel her legs. Sure there was no need to put so much efforts in 1500 race risking that much 200 final, but what can we say, she was young and world record meant a lot for her.
Can you point out some more appropriate example when 200 precedes the 1500 and both events are finals in the same session. Thanks.

They are both entered in 200 & 1500.
In the prelim session, Li had 1:58.14 – 16:14.19, Wang had 1:59.70 – 15:51.33.
In 200 free semifinal, Wang finished 10th with a time of 1:59.78 so she won’t swim 200 free final tomorrow. Li qualified first for 200 free final with a time of 1:57.54.

So there would be no real doubles in Tokyo. Wang will be focusing entirely on 1500 being fresh for this race ( no 400 and 200 races before 1500 competition) and Li will be interested in shorter races not having much chances in 1500.
Would be interesting to check on Wang current form tomorrow if she targets under 15:40 in Tokyo.

Zhang Yufei went 1:57.22 in the prelims before scratching so her PB is obviously faster than 1:58.

It would be out of topic and a lot has been already said about Zhang Yufei but since you mentioned her name ….
Some curious fact – all her best races in 100 fly were made in China:
56.62 – Chinese Champs
55.73 – Chinese OT
56.06 – China invite
56.18 – China Invite
56.29 – Chinese Champs
ETC
Hope my source is accurate and none of top her results were missed.

She had a breakout year in 2020, and there hasn’t been any international meets for her since then, for the reason that we all know.
