WOMEN: The UConn women’s swimming and diving team opened its 2017-18 schedule on Friday with a scrimmage meet against Yale.

“We had a good night of racing tonight,” said first-year Husky head coach Chris Maiello. “We are always looking for certain things in the first meet of the year. We look for the details in racing – starts, turns, technical skill and teammate-ship. We did well in these aspects, however we have a long way to go to hit our goals.”

Sophomore Eliza Manning (Frederick, Md.) won the 200-yard IM for the Huskies in 2:06.71 while the UConn 400-yard freestyle relay team of junior Jackie Van Lew (Tinton Falls, N.J.), freshman Jennie Novak (Eden Prairie, Minn.), junior Madeline Blair(Bethlehem, Pa.) and Manning were victorious in a time of 3:31.01.

“Our team has come a long way in the short time together and we need to continue to learn and develop,” said Maiello. “We had some good races and we had some races that we can be better in. We are looking forward to our season opening meet this weekend.”

The Huskies open their dual meet season next weekend in Storrs as they play host to Central Connecticut and St. Bonaventure on Friday at 11 a.m. and Fordham on Saturday at 1 p.m.
