The Yale women’s swimming and diving team took on Southern Connecticut State University this afternoon and came away victorious 157-83. The meet gave the Bulldogs one last chance to compete before they take a few weeks off of competition to focus on the end of the academic semester and winter training.
On the swimming side, the meet started off strong with a 1-2 finish in the 200-yard medley relay. The “A” squad of Heidi VanderWel, Pauline Kaminski, Sydney Hirschi and Mackenzie Franklintook the win in 1:47.71. The “B” squad of Michelle Chintanaphol, Alexa Kalandiak, Isla Hutchinson-Maddox and Carrie Heilbrun took second with a final time of 1:51.35.
The distance freestyle events were strong for the Bulldogs. Destiny Nelson took first in the 1000-yard freestyle with a final time of 10:17.19 and Elizabeth Felix took second with a final time of 10:24.06. In the 500-yard freestyle, Hutchinson-Maddox and Chintanaphol swept the top two places in 5:07.08 and 5:11.72, respectively.
In the shorter freestyle events, the Bulldogs swept the top places easily. Hirschi, Chintanaphol, and Franklin claimed the top three spots in the 200-yard event, finishing more than six seconds ahead of their competitors. In the 100-yard freestyle, Amy Zhao and Franklin took first and second place and in the 50-yard freestyle, Zhao, Kate Rogers and Vanderwel swept 1-2-3, respectively.
In the 200-yard individual medley, Kina Zhou took the win with a final time of 2:06.63. She was followed by teammate Kaminski, who finished in second place with a final time of 2:09.85.
The Bulldogs also swept the top places in the 200-yard stroke events. Heilbrun and Kalandiak took first and second place in the 200-yard butterfly, finishing in 2:07.96 and 2:11.87, respectively. Rogers and Felix grabbed first and second, respectively, in the 200-yard backstroke event. Lastly, Kaminski and Zhou easily took the field in the 200-yard breastroke, taking 1-2, respectively, with final times of 2:20.73 and 2:28.47.
In the final swimming event of the meet, the 200-yard freestyle relay, Yale’s “A” and “B” squads again emerged victorious, finishing in 1:37.63 and 1:40.45.
On the diving side, the Bulldogs performed very well, sweeping 1-2-3 on both boards. In the 1-meter event, McKenna Tennant took first with 313.35 points, Lilybet MacRae took second with 296.25 points and Olivia Loucks took third place with 246.3 points. In the 3-meter event, MacRae, Tennant and Hannah Walsh took the top three finishes, with final scores of 317.55, 304.8 and 285.9 points, respectively.
Now, the Bulldogs will turn their focus to the end of the academic semester and final exams. Then, after some time away from campus for the winter holidays, the team will reconvene in Florida at the end of December for the annual week-long training trip. While in Florida, the Bulldogs will also contest their official Ivy dual meet against Cornell at Florida International University.
